I am in my local beer shop where there are literally a thousand different beer choices, and a guy comes in, grabs a 12pack of Miller Lite, mills around a bit and starts heading to the checkout.

I'd never say anything since it's really none of my business but I really, really wanted to.

Any of you guys every spoke up and recommended someone try something without them asking for advice?

Just to family members, buddies, and co-workers....not to some random douche at a beer store. He was probably just buying for his little underage brother. :grinning:

I never have. If people want a recommendation, they usually ask for it.

Not that I mind a good discussion about beer but I do not want someone trying to tell me I am making the "wrong" purchase. If you don't want Miller Lite guy to convince us we are making the wrong choice why should we try to convince him he is? This is part of the reason better beer lovers are often tagged as snobs.

Love the beer you drink, answer questions when asked and be helpful when needed. No need to try to convince those who are satisfied with their current choices.

Never. Live and let live, even when it drives you a little nuts.

For me, I would have liked if someone told me about beer back when I thought all beer was the same. I didn't like beer because all I ever had was stuff like Miller Lite, Bud, Coors etc, so I was turned off. So if I were in a store and someone said "hey, buddy, give this a try" I wouldn't have taken offense.

I only make suggestions to people that are also in the craft section. If I see someone looking at a beer I have had I will let them know what I thought. But I never try to change anyones mind.

I offered up help last summer to a guy that looked confused. He said he has tried different beers before at different places but wasnt sure where to begin, so I helped him put together a mix-a-six and he was very happy for the help. Havent seen him since then so I dont know if he enjoyed them or not.

Never have, never will. The only time I even give a beer recommendation to a family member is if they ask for it. If somebody wants something new or better, they will seek it out.

No, I've had people ask me for advice before, but I would not walk up to a total stranger who is minding their own business and suggest to them that they're buying the wrong beer, that's absurd.

    ("Cool Story Bro" Alert:slight_smile:
2 days ago, in a beer section organized by state/country of origin -- with no knowledgeable employees around -- 2 people walk in and say "Where's Bell's from?" So I say Michigan, and they say thanks.

Then they ask an employee about Two Hearted. The employee mumbles some gibberish about another type of beer, "although you won't like it" (because people who like balanced IPAs don't like other styles?). They then find Two Hearted on their own. Since I saw the first Two Hearted on the shelf was from bottled in January, I tell them they should make sure to pick the most recently bottled ones, since they lose steam over time. They also paid ~$14 for the sixer, whereas the local Total Wine carries it for $9, which I also told them.

They seemed to think I was a bit annoying (although I might've been projecting), and I probably was. But I was just trying to help. Nice (albeit weird) guy? Or obnoxious, leave-me-alone jerk guy?

    nope.
it's none of my business. besides, if someone likes Miller Lite they ought to buy Miller Lite and not Stone IPA.

This one time, at Oktoberfest, I tried to tell these girls beside me drinking their liters of German lager and seeming to enjoy them that lagers are boring (because that's what I heard here on BA).

No. I don't care to force my opinions on anyone, let alone some random guy in the beer aisle.

Nope. Not if the person is going for a 12 pack of Bud/Miller/Coors/Luck Lager/etc. If someone asks my opinion I will give it, but sometimes people are looking for quantity or price over quality.

Never said anything about forcing someone to do anything, I'm just saying if someone has only drank a certain beer their whole life, it may be tough for them to branch out, the guy in my example was milling around the beer section, but it can be overwhelming with all the choices.

I told someone the other day not to get a He'Brew Hop Manna, because it tastes like cheese and sweaty feet. He didnt believe a beer could really taste like that so I told him to ask for a sample. Suffice it to say he didnt mind my otherwise rude eavesdropping.
