@TongoRad This is the first time I have had it so I can't say. I think it drinks a bit too sweet actually. And could use a touch more mouthfeel. I maybe should have said low to none hop aroma?

"Ithaca is gorges!". Not so far from my old hometown of Williamson, NY. Ithaca is a great town, and home to some of the wittiest bar bathroom graffiti I've ever seen. There is a massage school in town that I almost went to in the late 80's, and it's just over a couple hills from Watkins Glen.

That style definitely has quite a bit of caramel presence, but are only really good when the balance between residual sugars, slight roast presence and hop bitterness is spot on. Otherwise, well, that seems to be what you are getting today and the caramel takes over. Or they are just kind of dull and insipid. Does the bottle have a date on it?

Well hey, NBSers! Today will mark my second post in these venerated halls of new beer ..I can't wait. It'll be a while before I can get anything loaded up, but I'll say this: I'm doing a local-themed beer weekend & for my NBS selection I've decided to try Parkway Brewing Magella. I'm excited to see how it drinks & share with you all :-)

To all you fathers out there, I posted this yesterday as well & honestly it says everything far more eloquently than I ever could:

Happy Father's Day! Happy New Beer Sunday! Lets make it a great one & I'll catch up with you all later!

It is best before september2015. I am also cooking and my apartment is small so that can influence the nose.

Ok, morning errands are done, and now it's time to get back to doing what I do best : emptying bottles. Good morning, everyone. Happy Father's Day to you, and happy New Beer Sunday !!!!

This week's offering is Stillwater Artisanal Ales' Cellar Door American Farmhouse Ale. A wheat ale/saison brewed with white sage, 6.6% abv, Sterling and Citra Hops, poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my trusty tulip.

Appearance : A slightly hazy deep, straw yellow color which produced a light 1.5" head which quickly subsides. Almost no lacing retention in the glass. (4/5)

Smell : A faint herbal scent, combined with drying wheat and just the faintest hint of lavender. (3.75/5)

Taste : An initial wash of pear and green apple fruit, which progresses to honeydew melon, and then a bit of hop bitterness and a slight herbal/menthol twinge from the sage. After swallowing, there remains a bit of lemon combined with slight bitterness and a bit of phenol. The alcohol is there, but in line with the style and complimentary. (4.25/5)

Feel : Crisp, light, and what seems uncarbonated appearance-wise blossoms into foamy tongue tingling goodness. (4/5)

    Overall :
This is the first ale I've had from this brewer, and found it to be very well done. Too bad I was only able to score the one bottle, as I'd like to have one or two more. This is very refreshing, and ideal for the warm sunny days that we're experiencing in Charlotte now. Would pair great with a fruit/cheese plate, or grilled shrimp with lemon zest. (Note to self : buy fruit plate, shrimps, and lemons...) The sage is an interesting addition, and although it can be a pretty strong flavor, I feel it was used judiciously here and imparts a nice complementary note to an already complex brew. (4/5)

    Overall rating : 4.04 , (+0.2 rDev)

Cheers, and happy New Beer Sunday !!!!

    Happy NBS Fathers Day, everyone!

Up and at it early doing chores today. My new beer for the day is CynicAle, a saison from Surly. Pours a hazy yellow gold from a 16 oz can with a fluffy vanilla head. Can't read the smudged date on the can, but it's a saison, so what does it matter? A bit of fruit and clove on the nose, and a touch of Belgian yeast, though nothing overpowering. Taste is crisp and clean for a saison, a little fruit and spice with a hint of pepper on the finish. A good beer, reminds me somewhat of Hennepin. But overall, I like my saisons a little more on the funkier side than what I'm tasting here. Still, a good hot weather beer (which today isn't, so far).

Music for the day while puttering around is Dylan's Pat Garret and Billy the Kid.

    Cheers!

    Straub Kolsch

    Firstly, Happy Fathers Day everybody!!

I bought the Straub Sunshine variety 12-pack. This is my third summer variety pack purchase this summer (previously: Victory and Sierra Nevada). Since I am a big fan of the Kolsch beer style my first beer from this pack will be the Straub Kolsch.

On the neck label it states: This classic barley ale is pale gold with a mild fruity aroma making it a refreshing, sessionable beer perfect for spring and summer days!

    Some information from the box:

    Color: Straw

Malt: German Pilsner, German Heritage Wheat and Carapils

    Hops: German Perle and Tettnang

    Yeast: Kolsch Ale Yeast

    IBU: 25

    ABV: 5.0%

Served in my 0.4 liter Stange glasses:

    Appearance:

Straw color with a big, billowy white head. Excellent head retention with a beautiful Belgian Lace as the beer is consumed.

    Aroma:

A noticeable aroma of Pilsner malt with some subtle fruity notes.

    Taste:

Flavor is dominated by the malt (bready malt flavor) with low-moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel

Medium bodied, soft mouthfeel with a dry finish

    Overall

A refreshing beer to drink on a warm/hot summer day.

Last yeat when I bought the Straub Sunshine variety pack it contained German Pilsner, Hefeweizen, IPL and 1872 Lager. The highlight for me was the Hefeweizen.

This year’s Sunshine variety pack contains Kolsch, Hefeweizen, Vienna and Pilsner beers. I wonder which beer will be the highlight this year.

Cheers to Straub for making an enjoyable Kolsch beer!

C&Ps out of the way. G'day NBS faithful and Happy Father's Day!

It's a cloudy morning here in Casper. Fitting that I have a cloudy beer to enjoy as my new beer for today. An excellent Saison from the excellent brewery known as BFM.

I don't have another new beer for today but I will enjoy reading aboot all of the new to you beers posted today on the best thread BA has ever seen.

    Cheers!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Kolsch this year, especially the mouthfeel and dry finish, with a gentle pear/apple fruitiness.

Make sure to post about the Vienna when you get to it. This pack is probably their strongest overall, imo- all 4 beers are rock solid.

And Happy Father's Day, all you dads, btw!

6 months, maybe? I guess it could be starting to fade, or was stored warm. I'm definitely going to get some soon- my curiosity has been piqued. Cheers!

Good morning New BSers! Thanks to @cavedave for starting us off early - I missed it because I was cleaning my garage before the garage doors come tomorrow (allegedly) to put in my last new garage door. I'm taking a break now and having a late belated breakfast NEW beer thanks to the generosity of @TurkeyFeathers:

OK, I'm gonna duck and cover because I don't think this was the best beer ever make - it's good but so are a lot of other bourbon barrel aged (and non-BA) stouts and imperial stouts. It's just not to my taste - too harsh. Maybe if it aged two, three, four years or more it might mellow out - I just drank a cellared three year old Victory Wild Devil in which the whole character of the beer had changed from fresh - but I guess I won't find out.

Bottled 28 Aug 14 at 40.5 degrees into tulip. Some rust under cap.
    Aroma of bourbon
    Head – none
    Lacing – none
    Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor very much of bourbon with vanillin present. Alcohol present. No hops, no diacetyl. Immediate stomach burn.
    Palate full, oily, flat

Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.5, Flavor at almost one year: 4, Palate 3.5, Overall 3.75. Allowed to warm to 50 degrees, alcohol flavor is less harsh. Other than that, no appreciable change.

    Greetings friends,
Yesterday was really beautiful with the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill sending tendrils of Caribbean moisture and aromas through the Piedmont. Bright sun and heavy golden rain was very unique and wonderful to witness.. and it happened several times. The heat is pronounced, unusual, and difficult to like. And to think that I bitched about the cold Winter! Weather, what are you going to do!
Today's beer is Olde Hickory The Landmark Table Rock American Pale Ale. 5.5%, 50 IBUs, 12 SRM, and 13 degrees Plato OG.
This beer is a great reprieve from the plethora of IPAs- which I dearly love- but Table Rock focuses on the heritage of ales, and English ales in particular.
I could close my eyes and imagine being at some remote English locale and having this fine beer sitting on the bar. It is deep golden, with a gorgeous frothy white head, with pronounced beading keeping the brew fresh, alive, and beautiful.
While very hoppy and tart with citric notes, the rich malt base underpins a truly balanced American pale ale. I really like this beer.
I well remember the DBs and saw them often. They were a great band ahead of their time. Their jangledy energetic pop sound was an authentic regional product. The rest is history and I do believe that Chris Stamey and Mitch Easter deserve more credit for the evolution of American musical culture. This is a distinctive Piedmont sound.
