I've read for years about how monks brewed their high gravity beer as a substitute for food during their fasting periods. For lent (or other fasting periods I'm not aware of), they would survive only on the beer. The Belgian Trappist monks brewed their dubbels, tripels, and quads, and the German monks (Paulaner) brewed their high gravity dopplebock. This has always been an idea that interested me and recently I came upon this blog where a brewer survived on his home brewed dopplebock for 46 days of lent.

Inspired by his 25 pound weight loss and intrigued at the thought of drinking beer all day as a diet, I decided to try it myself. I'm not sticking to 1 style but instead rotating various high gravity beers so I don't bore my taste buds. Here's how its going so far, 9 days in:

    - I'm drinking a glass of milk with carnation breakfast essentials and a multivitamin in the morning to add a little protein and vitamins. My intent is not malnourishment.
    - I've doubled or tripled my water intake to help flush my system. The weight I'm losing is not water weight.
    - I'm consuming 1200-1500 calories per day, mostly in beer.
    - Hunger pains were really only present for the first 2 days. After that its just a generic mild hunger that can easily be ignored (except when I smell food).
    - I was a little cloudy on days 3 and 4, but by day 5 felt completely normal.
    - By morning on the 7th day I dropped 8 pounds, and its not water weight.
    - Day 7 on the weekend I went to an event and started drinking too much too early. While 1 beer can satisfy, getting drunk definitely has the opposite effect and causes hunger. I broke the fast and had a double bacon cheeseburger. Have to remember to drink in moderation!
    - Day 8 I had a tiny lunch and decided to get back on the horse because I loved the weight loss so much.
    - Day 9 I'm back at work and fasting again, very optimistic this time that I can beat the hunger.

So my intent here is not to toot my own horn. I'm having a lot of fun so I thought I'd share. But I'd like to know if anybody else out there has tried a similar diet. What did you do differently? Were you successful? Any tips moving forward? I'll check back in and let you know if I fail again.

For all of you naysayers out there, here is some recent research on the health benefits of short-term fast-mimicking diets:

Wow. Sounds like an intriguing, if not pretty damned fun experiment. Best of luck, and definitely keep us posted !

A Minnesota man did a beer diet and lost 50 pounds in 3 months. The link above is a story written about his diet. It was published in the Growler, a monthly magazine about the Minnesota beer scene.

One thing I've been avoiding is exercise. I'm worried I don't have the calories to spare and would end up over-exerting my body. I can't believe that guy says he could swim for 3-5 hours per day on only 1-2 beers. The exercise seems more insane than the diet.

I've not done it as a diet per se, but I do fast at least once a year. Though only 4 days at a time. During those 4 days it's water and beer only--typically 3 or 4 beers throughout the course of the day.

I think I'd actually have to become a monk to attempt this. 'Cause I can only imagine the look on my wife's face when I tell her that I'm going to subsist solely on Belgian beer for 2 straight months...

I'd be interested in reading some more on this if you can point me toward some resources. I just assumed it wasn't water weight because I'm drinking more water than I ever have in my life. I feel hydrated as heck.

There are so many factors that could affect his weight. The largest of which is he body make up before the diet. I agree that its mostly water BUT its not as simple as "8 pounds of fat is 28k calories and there is no way you did that".

Hmm. Interesting. I salute your experiment.

I myself probably couldn't do such a thing. I'm already underweight, so fasting would probably, like, not be healthy for me, haha.

Much of the fasting beer was under attenuated, so it was really more so drinking sugary wort.

Keeping track of calories in and calories out is the only way to lose weight. Apps like My Fitness Pal actually have a lot of beer listed on the site, so it may be of some help. Then you can track your macro-nutrients and see what you're really doing to your body. Low protein, low fat, high alcohol sounds like trouble in the long run. Something slower and steadier may have longer-lasting effects.

I've always been fascinated by this idea. With my work schedule, I can't possibly consider it until I retire, but afterwards? I'd love to try it out, even if "only" for a week or so.

Then again, I'd love to visit with monks for a month, too; two birds with one stone, perhaps.

I think the guy that did that back in 2011 ended up winning the Beer Drinker of the Year that year.

It definitely helps to have a job where they don't mind me drinking at my desk.

I have fasted like this before, but not by choice. Much of my weight loss was water weight, but that was also tied into a much lower salt intake for a week. Salt keeps water in your cells. Some is good, but too much leads to obvious health problems. There's a reason you receive a saline and glucose drip in the hospital.

When you drink a ton of water, you do not become more hydrated. Bodybuilders drink a ton of water to flush out sodium, which helps lose water weight. That's why big, vascular guys at the gym often have a 1 gallon jug of water. The problem with it is that you flush out a lot of nutrients and need to supplement vitamins, which your beer diet might be lacking. I'd avoid this type of diet because I think you're going to end up losing muscle and having a slower metabolism when you come out of it and then you will gain weight faster when you go back on regular meals, exceeding 1500 calories or whtever you are training yourself with.

    I thought you were joking...

"Founded in 1997 by the late beer-loving advertising exec Lew Cady -- who was working for the Wynkoop's then-owner, John Hickenlooper, at the time -- the BOTY was designed to find and reward America's most passionate beer lovers, wherever they lived.

Entrants didn't need to drink the most beer. Rather, they had to understand beer's place in history and culture and civilization itself. The winners were usually collectors -- of memorabilia or tasting-room experiences or beer-making knowledge and trivia."
