So...starting a new thread. Less about finding where it is and more about impressions of the brew. Is this another Surly miss? I feel like I'm part of the Bruery Reserve Society sometimes, pretending mediocre beers are good. The after taste is terrible. The mouthfeel's great, but the rest is kind of all over the place. VERY hot. I don't get it. If this brew (IMO) was brewed under Weyerbacher or Dark Horse brands it'd be an 85 rating, "move on, nothing to see here" beer. Five was a joke of a sour. I've been in Minneapolis since 2004 and have drank Surly since the beginning. Just feel like they don't do much unique -- Furious has completely fallen off into a malt bomb, and we're all kidding oursevles that this stuff is even above average (not to mention their line-up of ho-hum regulars). Crap away, but let's all be honest with ourselves here. What's going on?? Why do we actually continue to perpetuate the hype with this brewery?

Stopped reading after "Five was a joke of a sour." Just because it doesn't pucker your butthole doesn't mean it sucks. Five was brewed with Brett, not bugs, meaning it isn't supposed to be sour. I for one really enjoy Five.

Yeah, you gave Frangelic Mountain Brown a 4.7, so um, yeah...you're right, I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm expecting Surly homers to get riled up, more just looking for a real discussion. I've talked about this before -- a gaining group of us local Minneapolis beer nerds are losing the love, I can say that for sure. A bitter, a rauchbier, a helles, a mediocre brown ale, a malty IPA, nothing over 10%, and on and on...give me a break. Five was laughable. This is a B+ish at best. I've had some of the best beers in the world and I truly admire trying new things (the "honeycombs" that Todd tried, etc...), but this just isn't deserving of the hype, come on... BUT, the truck followers who loaded up and have created the hysteria here have proved me wrong and it increases trade value to get fired up about it...so, I get it. I have 2 more in the cellar. But, it's just, um, unremarkable.

Break down for me what sours you've had?? Russian River? Cantillon? 3F? If you "couldn't read past 'Five was a joke of a sour'" then you've never had a sour of any caliber...get a clue. What do you mean Brett, not bugs?

I was going to write some defense points for Surly but taste is subjective. You don't have to be a fan, but you're wrong in trying to tell us we're wrong. Thanks for your input and opinion on the brewery's beers.

When did Furious fall off into a malt bomb? No one told me.

I didn't say anyone was wrong - I just think they're wildly over-hyped and really don't stun when compared to other brews of the style (except for YUM, Abrasive and Wet!). The first response to my post told me I was wrong, no?? Is this a response to yamar??

Ok, so for real conversation... I think there are plenty of people that actually enjoy Surly's beers (homers and otherwise). I really, really enjoy Darkness and I will pick up myself a 4 pack of Furious from time to time. It's true, I've enjoyed some batches more than others, but I have still thought the "off" batches were pretty top-tier. Furious is not a West-Coast IPA, nor was it intended to be in my opinion. So yes, most of the rest of the country makes their IPAs a bit sweeter. That's an interpretation of the style, and not a reason to automatically disqualify its status. There are 2-3 regulars that are kind of average in my opinion, but there is a fairly distinct clean hop taste at the end of the majority of their beers that I think many people find agreeable. I also have really enjoyed their "event only" beers, such as Jesus Juice, which are quite unique. My only real knock on them is getting their releases nailed down better than "ready when it's ready." See, not butthurt, just discussion.

I will second the love for Five. Whether it stands up to the best sours in the world is immaterial - while it is somewhat non-traditional, it tastes damn good. Also, I would argue that Abrasive is one of the best DIPAs around, and I do love me some Wet too. Sure, Surly gets some extra hype since it is not available anywhere but in our fine state, but a little extra hype never stopped me from enjoying a beer if I think it's good, which in this case I do.

Are you kidding me??? Furious isn't a malt bomb?? Go bring a sample to the guys at Russian River or Stone and ask them what they think?? The thing used to be a gorgeous grapefruit, IPA delight, now it's a shell of itself. Open a Myrcernary or even a Stone IPA if you want to taste true to style IPAs and IIPAs (that you can get locally, not getting into the bigger coast IPAs (Elder, etc..)). Don't get me wrong, HUGE fan of Abrasive and Wet...very good, otherwise, I'm ho-hum on these guys. Somebody w some sense help me out here!

    Slow your roll home slice.

I'm sorry about your distaste for Surly. Maybe try something else.

You could be on to something with the furious, I still enjoy it alot but my palette has changed quite a bit since my first furious, it is a bit more subdued or balanced.

I third the love of Five. Coffee Bender also gets love cause It brewed year round and lighter than Breakfast Stout.

When I'm at work and I sate hops in my mouth and crave a beer it's most identifiable as a Stone IPA. Not sure what that has to do with anything g but it's been happening a lot lately.

Drinking Sheeps head now, at 6.95 on sale, how did I over look this solid brew.

I'm actually drinking a Inversion from Deschutes, eek. Am I an IPA snob?? This ain't the best...

(Also, fine, I'll open another Five -- what's the recommendation on how to compare it -- if it's not a sour, than what's the comparable style?? I'll give it another shot since all you guys are mad about this!)??
