So I finally got to try Alpine's Duet and Nelson this week. I have read the reviews and always wondered if I would ever have the chance to try them. When I saw both on a local tap list, I was estatic in anticipation to have them. In the end, I was unexpectedly underwhelmed by both. Thin, weak tasting beers. I get that I am in the minority (at least the ratings say so) but I can think of A LOT of other IPAs I would rather have than these.

So my question is, what beer or beers have you patiently waited for and been really let down after finally getting to try them?

    Cheers!

Green Flash's fault? That's what a lot of people say.

I would try the one's brewed by Alpine before making up your mind on those beers :-)

Green Flash Cellar 3 Silva Stout, love Green Flash, but this was a big disappoint.

2nd on the C3 Silva Stout. First attempt was a pure diacetyl Redenbacher BOMB! Mike at Green Flash implied that it may just be that I don't like what the beer was intended to be.... Decided to give it another try and, though more tempered on the buttery notes, was a tough one to finish and could NOT have been what the brewer had hoped for. IMO, a horror show.

Ouch! 6 replies in and so far all the beers poo-pooed are brewed by Green Flash. :grimacing:

I'll make it 7. What Green Flash has done to Alpine's portfolio is sad. Had Hoppy Birthday on tap and it wasn't enough close to what it should be.

Hate to be a combo breaker, but I'm going with Dragon's Milk. I have no problem with high-alcohol stouts, but the alcohol was just too strong in it, and it overpowered everything else.

Dark Lord. I mean, it has its own day. Imagine if Christmas or Thanksgiving was that disappointing.

I was at Alpine last July and had the same reaction. Good, but I was expecting something great.

This is a natural consequence of whale chasing. If you're satisfied with a beer before you take your first sip, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Pliny and zombie dust are two that come to mind. Hill farmstead was probably the biggest let down because of all the hype.

Boulevard's Imperial Stout X: Coffee. I still rated it a 4.08 (lol) but I tasted little coffee. I was prepared to rate it a 5, but it fell short. Still good, apparently.

As others have said, this may be Green Flash's fault. If you can, get your hands on bottles of Duet and Nelson as they are both being brewed by Alpine. I had both out of a bottle last weekend and they are excellent. Can't compare to draft, but I would be quite interested to know the results of a side-by-side comparison.

I had the same experience as OP with the same alpine beers and have heard there were issues from others as well. Does anyone know what green flash is doing differently with these beers?

I thought this was a thread about Kimbo Slice versus Shamrock the other night.

Back on topic. I keep expectations low; hence, I'm never let down.

For me it was PseudoSue on tap at the brewery. (And I love citra hops.) However, I was able to snag a couple bottles of it at other places while in Iowa, and two weeks later I cracked one of those open, and I loved it. Was this beer too fresh when on tap at the brewery? Probably.

Wasn't really waiting for it, but I thought Grapefruit Sculpin wasn't anything special. Although I did get to try Ommegang Nirvana IPA, wasn't expecting much but it turned out Uber delicious!
