I wish I could find super fresh bottles or kegs, but Founders is still hating on Maryland and Delaware, maybe in another 4 year I will be able to get Founders around me:wink:

Long crazy day as usual, finally getting a chance to post.

My sender for the NBS BIF #2 was @smanson56 and if you aren't following the thread Sandy crushed me with 78 total pounds of beer and swag, the gory details can be seen here: http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...-hauls-and-haikus.295633/page-28#post-3801264

I have already cracked a few of those beers, decided to open this one for the proper NBS post:

Trillium Brewing - Fort Point Pale Ale

I've had the pleasure of having a few Trillium beers so far and they've all been great, this one does not disappoint. Gotta love that hazy pour, super crisp hop nose, and a flavor burst of hop goodness. Especially viscous for a pale ale as well. Overall an excellent beer, thanks so much to @smanson56 for sending this gem!

This week for NBS I'm drinking a Boulevard Brewing Bourbon Barrel Quad. This is a brew that I've been holding onto for a while but have been anxiously looking forward to. It's an 11.8% ABV quad aged in bourbon barrels and cherries. The nose and taste both feature a nice balance between the bourbon barrels and the cherries. The quad base is delicious and highlights the barrel and cherries phenomenally. Overalll, a very solid quad that is higly enjoyable. Cheers!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Got a lot to get finished this week at work before the holiday weekend. Also as many are already aware, todays NBS brought to you in part by @beerloserLI; who sent a box to me for the BIF. A can of Resin was included, however I have already reviewed that before; and so I updated my review after over 3 years since the last; and it was a much better beer than I remember.

Here are today's new beers, mostly New York state locals were provided.

This was very nice. Nice clarity and rings of lacing down the glass. Aromas and flavors of blood orange, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine; with moderate malts of cracker, bread, and light honey with floral/grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus peel bitterness on the finish; with good balance and robustness of flavors; and a smooth finish with some hop oil stickiness and slight creaminess. Well balanced bitterness as well. Minimal complaints, comes off very well balanced between the fruit and hop flavors with a solid pale malt backbone. Really did enjoy this one. 3.9

This was an awesome English porter! Aromas and flavors of big chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, dark bread, light coffee, and light dark fruit; with some moderate herbal hop character and English yeast earthiness. Light herbal hop and roasted bitterness finish; with great bitter/sweet balance of roasted character and a nice moderately creamy mouthfeel with a slight touch of slickness. Medium body and light-medium carbonation. Really well restrained English yeast character, but the earthy/fruity vibe about the strain is what really adds some awesome complexity in the background. This tasted a hell of a lot like the Brown porter I kegged a couple months ago. Love it! 4.2

This was really nice. Aromas came off a bit subtle, but balanced. Dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, dark bread, and light charred malts; with light raisin/plum yeast fruitiness and some herbal hop character. Moderate amount of herbal/roast/charred bitterness; with a nice bitter/sweet balance of roasted character; with a very creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel, with a bit of chalky/sticky notes from hops and roasted malt as expected for the style. Lower carbonation very full bodied; warming finish but zero booziness. Fits very well with the English style it should be. No idea on bottle age, but it was still adequately hopped and nicely bitter, with overall impressive malt complexity. Very enjoyable. 3.88
    [IMG]

Really awesome stuff as expected. Aromas and flavors of bright grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine; with moderate light caramel/toasted bread malts and floral/grassy hop earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with a crisp and fairly sticky mouthfeel, with slight creaminess. Very well balanced bitterness and sweetness with zero warming alcohol. Really glad I finally got to try this one, but this basically tastes really similar to my go-to Founders Centennial, with bit more tropical hop flavors. Value price point is not worth a repeat buy for me(If I even got access eventually). 4.2

Cheers, have a good night NBS.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- A clear amber with a lot of floaters with a small off white head.

S- Maple, bourbon, sweet, oak, dark fruits, tart cherries?, mint, oxidation, some complexity that I'm having trouble describing but it is great.

T- Maple, bourbon, earthy spice, sweet malts, raisins/figs, hints of grapefruit rind, brown sugar, smooth, great complexity.

M- Smooth, medium to full body, low carbonation

O- I have not tried this fresh but I have tried fresh Sweet Repute and this is better. Complexity is great, very smooth, almost no alcohol. If you can get a hold of a bottle, get it!

All right, NBS! Eight pages deep! Fortunately, I'm coming back with a bang: four new beers for the evening! The first two are from Cliff's fantastic box o' brew. As I was sharing all of these beers with a buddy (who provided me a fantastic steak dinner), my reviews are all ratings only. I may go back and provide a more fleshed out review later.

Half Acre Beer Hates Astronauts IPA

Seems like this might be a single-hop Citra IPA. Pretty nice overall brew; the mouthfeel just seemed somehow lacking in something, although it's hard to put my finger on it. Hilarious story to the beer name and label.

    18th Street Galaxy Slayer DIPA

Not sure if this beer actually uses galaxy hops, but I am sure that it's damn tasty. Juicy and thick; a very good DIPA all around.

Mystic Mary of the Gael Saison

Lots of Belgian yeast on this one, but it settled down into something very smooth and drinkable. Nothing overwhelmingly good, though, either; a bit like a Belgian Pale Ale.

    3.85 / -2.5%

Prairie Cherry Funk (sorry, forgot to take a picture)

Wow; this was damn good! I wonder if the low rAvg is due to people drinking it fresh and not allowing it to develop, or because there isn't some overwhelming cherry flavor. Or perhaps I'm just screwy. Either way: very tart, with a nice musty funk. Cherries are very organic-tasting: think pits and peels. A really, really nice sour overall.

    Cheers all and good night!

Honestly, Cherry Funk & I just didn't get along. More than likely she hadn't aged enough, but she just tasted like a skunked pilsner with a bit of cherry.

Better late than never, right guys? From the generosity of BA @JayWhitson I present my first bottle of Epic Brewing Big Bad Baptist-stout with cocoa nibs and coffee added and aged in whiskey barrels.

The aroma is nice silky, smooth milk chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and whiskey
The taste is pretty much what I look for in a BA stout. Follows the nose and gets better as it warms up because the whiskey barrel flavors become more prominent.

I am really digging this one and hope to have it again some day.

Citrus jumps forth. A little tropical too. My palate might be shot to get more descriptive than that. It's really quite nice. Thanks so much.

Sorry Folks. Late night on the left coast. Visiting my buddy @Efrainpaniagua and tried his homebrew, a very pleasant IPA, and he enjoyed sipping the Sip of Sunshine. But now I'm breaking back into my beautiful (and plentiful) NBS BIF box from @Prager62

Deal With The Devil, 18th Street Brewing

Pours a rich amber honey hue. Frothy off white head. Smell is a blend of tropical hoppy goodness with a bit of peppery rye leaning notes. A little biscuity malt comes through as well. Taste is more in the direction of bready malt covered in rye and pepper and a bit of earthy malt..I guess. It's very good. Slightly sticky on the finish with some piney notes. Mmmm

Had a very long, but very good, day today -- spent entirely away from home, for once! A friend ~60 miles away invited me to her birthday party, which consisted of meeting up around her house, then carpooling to a renaissance faire going on nearby, and then coming back later for pizza and beer and just hanging around talking and goofing off. Despite me not knowing a single one of the other people involved (aside from the birthday girl herself, anyway) I didn't have any trouble at all, crowd issues never came up as I spent so much of the day in a "wandering around with people" area that I was already at least semi-comfortable with most of the other people before any "in a room with a bunch of people" situations came up. I think I can even still remember a couple of their names.

Anyway, since this is a beer forum after all -- on to the beer! Actually had two new beers today...

...no picture of the beers themselves, just their caps, as both were drank right out of the bottle. Not my preferred method of drinking a beer by a long shot (haven't had a single beer yet that seemed better that way vs. in a glass), but it works and I didn't think to ask for a glass (...really should have now that I think about it -- I noticed later on that there were several glasses in the cabinet including a standard restaurant-type mug and a Bell's branded pint glass.)

First beer was Guinness Blonde, which I brought a six-pack of to the party (conveniently, they were on sale and I had a $2 mail-in rebate coupon thing, so I effectively got this six-pack for $5.99!) Tasted... well, "beery" was the first word that came to mind. Upon further drinking -- seemed that this one definitely was a bit tastier by itself rather than with food, maybe a bit of a clash with something in the pizza. I suspect it will be better in a glass rather than right out of the bottle (and I'll be able to confirm that soon enough, as I still have two bottles left... not a lot of beer drinkers at the party, most people went for a plain ol' glass of water.)

Second was Shiner Bock, which was already waiting in my friend's fridge when I got there. Tasted a bit on the "almost roasty, but not quite there" side with a bit of a nutty sort of thing on the end which was kinda nice, but after a few drinks I noticed an odd smell that sort of seemed a little bit like... pond water or really wet mud. Odd. Had this one on its own rather than with food, as I'd already finished off a salad plus three slices of pizza by this point, so unsure if it would be better paired with food vs. on its own. Wasn't too bad taste-wise but the smell was a bit funky and I think overall I liked the Guinness Blonde better. Still, I'll probably give this one a second try at some point (in a glass this time.) Also, very nice goat bottle cap!

Very late post, but this beer is thanks to @Ozzylizard and the NBS BIF 2. Today I tried Lavery Ulster Breakfast Stout. Before this BIF i had actually never heard of this brewery but im glad I got to try this beer because it was fantastic. Aroma and taste full of milk chocolate and coffee, im glad I was sent 2 bottles because i can't wait to have another one. This would be amazing with both breakfast and dessert. This was a fantastic BIF and I cant wait do to more in the future.
