Momma gave me a bunch of dates from the farmers market. Was wondering if anybody has brewed with dates??

They're just like big delicious raisins. I would love a date beer.... Something of Belgian influence could be nice with some of them dates.

a date quad might be interesting, it would probably bring out more of those dried fruit flavors that already exist in the beer. would take a bt of messing around to get a good recipe but its definitely doable.

I've noticed notes of date in Pannepot - booze-soaked dates, but dates nonetheless

Also totally thought this thread was going to be about beer to drink on dates  lol :stuck_out_tongue:

I was thinking either a Quad or Barleywine, if I go barleywine I would want ABV above 10% but not sure how the date sugar would affect that? Never brewed with any other fruit beside grapefruit and orange so Im kinda feel like Im entering a new ball park

Something similar to Olde School? I know that's made with figs, but figs and dates both have the dark sugar/molassesy thing going on for them. Maybe use a buttload of rye (and necessary buttload of rice hulls) to get some of that rye spice, an estery Belgian strain and a nice handful of Saaz...I like where I'm going with this...

I love to date beer but the relationship never lasts. At first the head is great but, that doesn't last. Those Belgian blonds tho...

To figure out the ABV impact, you'd need to know a couple things about the dates (in a addition to your base recipe numbers)...

    - The water volume contained in a pound of dates
    - The sugar weight per pound of dates

I would guess googling could scare up these numbers.

I've used 1# of date sugar with good results. Good aroma and flavor.

Date sugar is dehydrated dates ground into fine granules. I imagine you would have to use more whole dates to get a similar result.

Big Mama's Barleywine, a recipe from XTreme Brewing, uses a pound or so of raisins in the last few minutes of the boil. I'm guessing you could do the same with dates and get similar results. It's around 11% abv. You could make it your own and call it "Your Momma's Barleywine".

If I find the recipe and you're interested I can send it your way. I've got it at home somewhere...
