This black, slightly viscous stout pours to a beautiful medium creamy brown head that gradually dissipates to a thick ring and leaves sparse, delicate lacing. The nose is a bit sweet and darkly malty, a very nice blend of chocolate, caramel and dark toffee with hints of coffee and readily apparent boozy undertones. On the palate, it is sweet chocolate and cocoa up front, joined by a significant molasses character and hints of coffee mid-palate. The finish is dark, roasted maltiness that leaves behind a lingering chocolate/molasses flavor and a slight bitterness. Mouthfeel is full and luxuriously thick, as well as warming due to the ABV; the carbonation makes itself known as well. Alcohol flavors are surprisingly absent from the palate, so caveat bibitor.

tl;dr: Lives up to the hype!

Now I'm having Coffee Oatmeal Stout by Good People Brewing, out of Birmingham, AL. Not really getting any coffee or oatmeal. All I smell and taste is hops. It does have an odd after taste. Just tastes like a watered-down Black Pale Ale. Not digging this one at all. Oh well! Cheers!

    Hi New Beer Sunday'ers!
(Yeah, I'll stick an apostrophe anywhere.)

As @cavedave the legendary BA, and one of the eloquent NBS-starter-uppers suggests, first I offer yee gentle readers a few intimate words about myself and my personal problem.

My name is Jim and I love quality ale.

After many years prowling this site and then eventually joining BA, this will be my first NBS post. I love great beer!

Just between us, I'm not a leper, but people who believe this to be so, leave me alone.
Mission accomplished. : ) Present company excluded of course. I love beer by the way.

Question authority, avoid routine, and steer clear of social obligations...other than drinking quality ale.

I'm a business owner who's seriously allergic to work, and thus...work is my bane. I also love great beer. I'm an underachieving artist-type, but I know enough to be dangerous and occasionally (when necessary), can give the impression that I'm... [gasp!] a professional.

And purely for my own entertainment, I relentlessly mock, make fun of, laugh at, and ridicule those who drink crappy beer in public and online...but only to myself and me. Oh, and I love beer too!!!

    Now to the new beer!

On the day of @JuicesFlowing 's final and #1000 beer review, I will take up the torch for at least one day or more, and offer my new beer review #1.

    It's Weyerbacher's 20th anniversary Belgian-Style Dark Ale!

    Dark, sweet, aromatic and lacy.
As a lover of their Quad and Blasphemy I got all twitchy when I saw this release from Weyerbacher at the shoppe. I suspect many of you fine BA's have drank Quad and Blasphemy. These beers get a lot of love and hate out there in cyberspace. Their labels enjoy that same love / hate scenario too, but I generally like 'em and appreciate the design, execution and fantasy themes. The label design on this ale is a nice historical montage of Weyerbacher elements.

    Skip to the end:

    I love this ale!!!
The sweet caramel and raisin notes with anise and 11% ABV keeps my head in the fantasy world...

    Cheers NBS and WBAYDN folks!

Still on my big beer break, having this one before the St. Bernardus 12 "group drink".

This is the Nebraska Brewing Cardinal Pale Ale.

First off, as a Cardinals fan (baseball. ....not the football team....), I find this can just about as lovely as any can I've seen!

See? Is that not the sweetest looking can, ever?

So it's a nice looking beer with a proper head and very nice lacing with a superbly colored beverage beneath. It's crisp, clear and orange.

Massive malt backbone dominate the nose immediately until a hint of citrus comes around.

Taste is respectable but not too demanding at first. Follows the nose precisely with malts, then a little citrusy but the real story here is in the gentle spice on exit. Surprisingly multi dimensional with a clean finish.

This is an underrated brewery, seriously. They are 2 for 2 in my book.

Hello, NBSers! No, I'm not dead; I'm just now getting around to posting. (Don't worry; for the sake of my liver, I've been drinking all day!)

I started off the day with a couple BIF brews from @BigRedDog .

    Burn 'Em Brewing Coconoats APA

    Evil Czech GG Patton Pilsner

I've been slowly working through Cliff's massive box, and I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. These were some good brews. Coconoats was a creative brew, and save for a touch of butter, would have been outstanding. As it was, it was a very good beer, although you have to like coconuts to appreciate it.

GG Patton is a damn good, traditional pils. Bready, biscuity, slightly sweet; a clean overall profile; bitter and floral. Really well done brew. I don't always drink Pilsners, but when I do, this is a darn good option.

    Coconoats:

    4.02 / +6.6%

I then took another bottle from the BIF box to a brunch bottle share. I selected the collaboration between Jester King and Off Color: Radiolaria American Wild Ale. I did not take a picture, as I felt it would be rude. I also enjoyed some other great brews (some new, some not): Tree House Green, Jack's Abbey Lager Ness Monster, and Fiddlehead Tejas Marron. Ratings only, as I didn't feel a full review in such company was appropriate.

Radiolaria: 4.09 / -2.9% Funk, tart, and delicious. Goes quite well in a beermosa, for the record.
Lager Ness Monster: 3.93 / -8.4% Big and bold. Higher ABV than BA Framinghammer, but not necessarily better.
Tejas Marron: 4.0 / -5% Hoppy and smooth. Really nice brew.

I then had to refuel my box for @WesMantooth . The local brew lineup has shifted ever so slightly, but I'm sure I'm sending quality brews that he will enjoy. Hopefully this time they'll actually make it. While picking up the first wave of growlettes, I tried out the new Outer Light Brewing Company beer, named in part with the help of our local hasher group: Trail Magic Session IPA.

This is damn good. I don't like most session IPAs, but this actually has some body, and it doesn't lean toward the dank hops, instead tending toward grapefruit pulp and orange peel. Very nice; maybe there's hope for this style yet.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/38293/179836/?ba=Roguer
    4.01 / -2.4%

And finally - finally - I'm hitting the final brew from this session's NBS BIF box. The last one is yet another brew from 18th Street: Ed-PA English IPA.

English IPAs are among my least favorite styles (along with Belgian IPAs, Session IPAs, Berliner Weisses, and Witbiers). That said, this is pretty solid, and definitely enjoyable.

Another fantastic NBS BIF experience. Cliff, thanks so much for the fantastic beers; Terry, LehighAce, thanks so much for organizing the event again. I look forward to the next one with great anticipation (assuming I'm above the waterline :grinning:).

    Cheers, all!

Might even be reminiscent to the great St. Bernardus Christmas Ale. Which might be why I posted that winter selfie. :astonished:
I was unable to track down an SB Abt 12 for today's simul tasting at 5PM...but if I did, then my inaugural NBS wouldn't have happened today or maybe ever.

Going to cheat slightly while I'm here, and upload a flight from last night. I happened to stop by the Trinity Brewpub in Providence, RI. Plus: their flight is a total of (6) 5 oz pours. Minus: most of their beer wasn't particularly good.

The only ones I can recommend in good conscience are the Captain America IPA (with Citra) and The Milkman milk stout. Reviews of all six are in my profile, but only check them out if you're a masochist; the beers were mediocre at best.

This is a somewhat new beer. It was released for the first time in October 2014 so it is about 9 months old. This bottle is probably not as old as that although it is not dated. Foley Brothers out of Brandon, Vermont opened their doors in 2013. This is their Citrennial IPA.

There is an attractive looking hazy light amber pour under a modest head. What intrigues the most about this beer is the pineapple, grapefruit, and melon characteristics in both the nose and taste. Well, that is not TOO intriguing because so many IPAs are like that. But that is what I got. It had a light and refreshing body. The hops were not as "in your face" as some hopped up beers, which is why I kind of liked it. Clean finish.

started off ice cold although it says on the bottle 52-56 deg. smells of raisins, figs maybe? taste is slightly boozy but overall what i'd expect from any good quad. lacing still remains on the glass as im typing and its been a few minutes. i can now say it is better (much better) as it warms. bottle date says 04 07 18 incase anyone is wondering. ohh and i almost forgot this is for @WesMantooth , we were discussing this earlier this week

    New American Pale Ale Sunday

Hello all and Happy Birthday Dave! Beautiful Fourth of July weekend here in Milwaukee...80's and sunny - Yesterday morning I picked up a beer that is appropriate for today - HHG APA Americana Pale Ale - from Central Waters. It's a limited brew in a 22 oz. bottle - Shame it isn't a regular in a 6-pack. Another winner from this great brewery! I scored it a 4.23 which is slightly higher than the current average. A pleasant, hop-forward pale ale!

Thanks for the kind words sir. And your description of that beer has left me seriously craving it.

Weyerbacher is a brewery I love, not for the least reason that one of their former brewers, Dann Hitchcock, is now the owner and head brewer of my favorite local here in NY, Rushing Duck. Curiously, they just released, and I just tasted yday, a Quad that had been in apple brandy barrels for 14 months and it, almost literally, blew my socks off.

We normally get the anny beers from them, I will definitely be on the lookout. Welcome to NBS, hope you can give us the birdseye lowdown on more beers in future. Cheers!
