So the bottle I have says, "the beer formerly known as La Tache." Is this the same beer, or a different version? Why the rebranding, if that's what it is?

Thanks in advance to anyone wise in the ways of ale apothecary.

My memory is telling me that it was some sort of legal action/threat of legal action by a winery that forced AA to rename.

La Tache is a grand cru vineyard in burgundy. It is respected as one of the preeminent grape growing plots of land on earth. Not surprisingly, the owners of said plot were not amicable to allowing use of the name of said plot without commercial rights.

The beer formerly known as la tache is the same beer, just not referencing the prior mentioned plot of land. Because, you know, people that have built a name for generations and legal stuff.

To be honest, I'm entirely unclear how this maneuver actually avoided any threat of legal action.

Same beer, just Paul's sense of humor coming through in complying with the agreement. I think he wrote a blog post about it at the time.
