Not that i expect everyone to be a packing expert, but having worked for UPS for so long, one of the number one rules is dont use fuckin newspaper! Ill never understand how people wont take the extra 10 bucks to get peanuts, bubble wrap and a bigger box, i sympathize with the fact that shipping is expensive and its sucks and we try to minimize factors to reduce shipping costs BUT, ("this is the business we have chosen!"- godfather part II) it gets expensive , but guess what? if u dont package it right the first time u have to pay again for shipping and in some cases the bottles when u could've done it right. Just my $0.02

Amen. Just shipped a box with peanuts for the first time in a while the other day. Did the dropping of the box at waist high test and it was the softest drop I'd done since I first started doing the test. Peanuts are the truth, newspaper sucks.

Do you recognize the pennies in the right pic? Any of the packing material, looks like a -Worth- county newspaper or something.
That left pic is worthless. Could've taken a picture of a box in a dumpster.

Pretty sure you can ship liquids on all major carriers, but I don't use USPS so maybe not on them....

Not to pile on too much, the idea of bottles not moving is great, but if it's solid like a brick any force from impact will result in a large impulse (basically the force/change in momentum occurs over a short time) which is dangerous. Cushy materials spread out the force time, lower impulse, better for bottles.

On a personal note, packing peanuts are annoying because they start to spill everywhere and saving them takes a lot of space. I go bubble wrap heavy, got 600 sq ft for $40. Or shippers. But always with bubble wrap in shipper slots to make sure bottles don't move but are cushioned

@BrownAleMale there are numerous exceptions to the official shipping policies across all carriers. I shipped a box last year that had a NG Cran-bic burst. FedEx repacked everything minus the one bottle & delivered it. The other trader & I assumed a bottle burst because the other bottles were somewhat sticky & a Cran-bic was missing. The box took a torturous detour before going back on track for delivery. I was curious about that but because I was shipping beer it seemed wise to enjoy my good fortune & swallow my curiosity.

Peanuts require knowledge & care to use appropriately. A box full of peanuts & loose bottles will quite possibly see the bottles sink through the peanuts to the bottom of the box with little real protection.

I prefer Styrofoam shippers. If I'm not using a shipper, I'd rather pack with carefully wadded newspaper than peanuts. Old bubble wrap, including pieces 'ruined' by tape, also work well to insulate packages.

I will never understand why people us the US Postal Service to ship. I hear its cheap...... Hey you mean I can get a box for free, tape for free and I can cram it as full as possible for one low price? Hazzaa!!

This is not a hobby for the cheap or frugal. There have been times when my shipping cost was more than the bottles I was trading. I don't care, I want my beer to get there safe and sound with no breakage.

    SMH!!

I use the flat rate boxes because they arrive in two days and i have never had an issue. I only use them when shipping a small amount of beer, and often the price of shipping exceeds that of the beer in these situations. If it's packed well there will be no issues. Saying any one carrier is better than the others is nonsense, in the long run they all carry the same risk.

    1) USPS will absolutely deliver boxes that are soaked through with liquid - your friend is wrong, and I know from personal experience. Like dripping, soaking wet.

    2) Packing a box super tight, as several people have noted, is a bad idea (science/force/etc). Take that super tight box, put it on the floor, and drop another 40lb box on top of it - where does the force go? This is why box inside a box, and a shitton of bubble wrap, or styro shippers, is the best idea.

    3) Nonetheless, he needs to make this right, and hopefully it all works out in the end, and everyone learns some lessons from all of this.

I think it would be easier to agree with you if you didn't do a horrible job packing IMHO. Five bottles in either size flat rate, especially bottles that weight and size, is ridiculous. I urge you to rethink your packing to avoid trouble in future. It only takes one breakage incident to undo all the money saved by cheaping out and sending USPS flat rate. BTW I have never had a breakage in any box I have sent, about 150 at this point.

I overpack crazily. Only it isn't overpacking, it is insurance my boxes arrive with all intact.

BTW anyone who wants free shipping boxes, and free bubble wrap, cardboard shippers, and styrofoam of all kinds, and can meet me anywhere near to New Paltz, NY, I pull amazing quantities from the waste/recycle stream, much more than I can use nowadays, and would be happy to see it get re-used.

We are on a complete assumption that bottles even broke at all. He has been so truthful about everything else to this point. He even came on here and said he would ship this weekend, and still no communication or tracking info. I whole heartedly believe he saw it packed in a USPS box and figured an easy out was saying breakage.

The lynch mob has come out in full force, yet you don't hear from anyone that I've traded with in the past or sent a bif box to about receiving anything broken. Only now with a guy who hasn't shipped his side of a trade and has come on here with some far fetched story.

My track record would indicate that my packing can be no where as horrible as some of you have indicated. Some people forget, just because something isn't the way YOU like it doesn't make it bad necessarily. There's people on this site that would be here that I shipped it USPS and say it was bad shipping no matter what. Just because they don't like it and that's foolish. If you never had possession of the box and saw the pack job is very hard to say that it was bad.

Let me see if I can translate:

Kudos to you @Pizzapie for owning your mistake, but once you've done that, you actually need to follow through on what you've promised...after your initial promises have proved hollow. Once you continue blowing off deadlines, your initial "sorry" looks more like a "sorry, I don't give a shit" rather than a "hey, sorry I screwed up." And your cryptic one-liners with little to no context aren't helping.

tl;dr: get the man his beer tomorrow (tonight would be better), send him his tracking number right away, & quit adding to the damage to your rep.
