Just found out that Ale Asylum is releasing a Belgian Imperial Stout and a Russian Imperial stout on Aug. 29th. Both were tank aged, and are probably solid beers. They are doing a big event and essentially trying to have a mini Dark Lord Day. But, the big issue I have with this is that they are charging $40.00 for 2 bombers (one of each), and you have a limit of 2 each ($80). Then, just to get into the festival it's another $40. Not sure about anyone else, but for 2 beers that have never been tasted and to charge that much for an event that only gets you 2 tastes and a pint glass, I feel that's a bit pricy... What do you think? Would you spend that kind of cash on this event. It's not that I've never spent this kinda of cash on beer before, but it was always beer I have tasted before and knew it deserved that price point.

    More info here.

Who the hell is Ale Asylum?

I'll take the $10 designated driver ticket for unlimited soda and Reverend Horton Heat.

$40 to get in with a couple of tastes and another $40 for two bombers? Ale Asylum has not earned that type of pricing. I mean, come on. New Glarus only charges $10 for R&D releases. Do you really think it's a good idea to price people out of your fan club?

They belong in a real asylum. I routinely see AA beers marked down in stores, and I still pass them by. I hope these special releases are good, but I'm past the point where I'll ignore price just because I see 'tank aged' and 'imperial'; I've been burned too many times.

Speaking of, just what is "tank aged"? Cause it sounds like they just left it in a fermenter for a while. Mmm stainless steel...

Wow! I hope nobody buys tickets to that festival. What a rip off. $43 to get in, 2 samples, and a glass? Whoa, there's a band? Big deal. You have to buy the beer once inside.

    UPDATE from Ale Asylum:

"Here’s a quick breakdown of the $40 festival ticket:

$25 is the typical ticket price of Reverend Horton Heat ticket
$5 Commemorative 16 oz. logo glass, same price as most breweries charge
    $12 (2) 6 oz pours of a premium release beer, typically $1 or more/ounce
Overhead: staff, security, tents, portas, etc
Access to one-of-a-kind aged releases and vertical tastings
    FREE PERKS throughout the festival

The $10 DD ticket covers the band plus unlimited soda during the festival (this is pretty standard pricing), and who can argue with giving a discount to those fine people making sure their companions get home safe?

As far as the bomber bottle pricing goes, these Imperial Stouts have a much higher ingredient cost (as in a hefty malt bill) than associated with our year-round or seasonal releases. We are not in the market of tossing overpriced (under quality) beers out into the market that we don’t stand behind. We truly hope you decide to purchase a set or two so you can be as excited with how they turned out as we are!

Hopefully this allays any frustrations or concerns you have. We’re not in this to walk away with a huge sack of cash. We’re in this to provide a unique experience for our customers.

    Cheers,
    Otto Dilba and Dean Coffey
    (Ale Asylum Co-Founders)"

So essentially if they didn't have the band, that would make the Entry Ticket $15.....

In comparison, Darkness Day at Surly is free to get in with many free bands playing all day long, food trucks, bottle shares, rare and limited beers on tap (for a fee of $4 per beer ticket) and the ability to buy up to 6 bottles of Darkness at $20/each. They also have staff, security, tents, portas, etc.

Darkness Day obviously has evolved into one of the premier beer releases in the country each year and they have had many years of practice to get the release to where it is today, but maybe Ale Asylum should start small if they are wanting to turn these beers into an annual release event (ala - Darkness or Dark Lord day). I don't think they'll have the turnout the had hoped for this release, as I'm guessing the $40 entry fee alone will turn a lot away. Maybe I'm wrong and I wish them the best, but maybe they should release the beers without much hoopla the first year to see if they speak for themselves and are worthy of such an event?

    $40?
Who's the band... It had better be the very last, last show for the grateful dead.

Was the beer actually aged in a real Tank.? Like an M1A1? Like they used in Desert Storm.
Now that I would pay 40 dollas for. Brings a whole new meaning to "barrel aged"..
