Just got back from a trip to Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic where I had fun visiting some biergartens. Would love it if we could do this in the States. Got me wondering what peoples' opinions are on what makes a great Biergarten.

Having been fortunate enough to have visited Hofbrauhaus, I can speak to a few things that jumped out at me.
    1) Size. The bigger the better. Open-air layout is a must.
    2) Selection. Nothing crazy, but at least one style of beer for everyone.
    3) Staff. The servers must be as excited as you are that you're having one of their beers.

What I liked a lot was all the trees. None of this sitting out on the sidewalk in the hot sun which is what too often passes for outdoor seating in the States. Also that they allowed you to bring your own food if you wanted to

The place I was at in Salzburg that you wash your own mugs. Trees, great beer, great company, outside, relaxing, great beer,

sitting on the sidewalk is not a great time by me.

    Enjoy

    I like this place http://bohemianhall.com/

I haven't been there in years because its kind of out of the way and its better to go with more than just a couple of people.

Huge pretzels, obatzda and smoked chicken. Open air with huge beers and friends in implied. Nice bike ride to get there as well.

I think the Germans have a word for that...
Hofbrau just opened a stand-alone Biergarten in Chicago suburb Hoffman Estates and are helping to sponsor the resurgence of Biergartens in Milwaukee -- you need to head west.

    More Milwaukee.

Lots of trees, tables, good German beer (or at least style), and a polka band! We have a place like this in San Antonio called Beethovens!

This place in Queens is great, great European brews, great food, great atmosphere...goes crazy during the world cup. Tons of room and big tables out in the sun in the middle of the city. Oldest beer garden in NY.
