I have a buddy going to visit family this weekend. I know they live in Traverse City, anyone have any suggestions on targets in and around that area this weekend? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Cheers
    Pat

Jolly Pumpkin out on Old Mission Point. Right Brain is pretty close to downtown and Brewery Terra Firma is just a little farther out. Won't be too far from Short's.

North Peaks and TC brewing are right down town, but I would refer to the ones mentioned above and bypass these. Also 7 Monks Pub is a great place.

I see you are from GA. Was just in Atlanta last week and enjoyed your beer city - The Porter was just a few blocks from the inn where we stayed in the Highland neighborhood. Also enjoyed some Three Tavern's, Creature Comforts, Sweetwater, and Terrapin!

Great to hear. Yeah, Atlanta is a little late to the party, but our beer is getting better by the day. Hope you were able to snag some Tropicalia or Transmigration while you were there. If not, I'll be happy to send some your way.

    Cheers

Rare Bird is good. They have a lot of guest taps, that you won't find normally. Their beers are pretty good also.

Another vote for Jolly Pumpkin. That drive getting there is worth it alone. Their pizza is very good and if you get an outdoor table, the scenery looking over the bay is awesome. You can get North Peak brews there too. Only bummer I found is if you want to buy Jolly Pumpkin beer to take home, they charge $3-$4 more per bottle than what you might pay at a store.

so are you visiting or just tryin to help out a buddy?
7 Monks is the best taproom ive ever been to and is often listed as one of the best in the country. They always have an outstanding taplist and the people know their beer. the food is awesome as well.

Workshop Brewing is worth a visit. They have a few pretty good ones on tap right now and their food is also great.

Jolly Pumpkin is out on Old Mission and they make nothing but sours. they usually have a few available not on their regular distibution. Again, the food is worth the visit alone. Also the drive is great.

Others worth a look include, Terra Firma, Brewery Ferment, Hop Lot, Filling Station, Rare Bird. Right Brain is a cool place but the beer is just ok for me. Lake Ann Brewing just opened up right by my house. They brew some pretty basic styles but they are good quality, its worth checking out if you are on the west side of town.

North Peak beer is ok to good but i prefer going to just about any other place i listed over them. Mackinaw Brewing is bad.

Lastly the two best Breweries in the area are Shorts and Stormcloud but the are both about 45 minutes from downtown TC in the opposite directions from each other. In my opinion, Shorts and 7 Monks are the two must visits with Stormcloud being right there with them if you can make time for the drive. The nice thing about driving up here is once you leave TC, there is really no traffic and the scenery is great.

Good bottle shops to check out would be The Beverage Company and Burrits Market.

Another thing worth noting is the National Cherry Festival is going on this week and weekend. It is the busiest week of the year for this area. Carnivals, parades, fireworks, concerts all happening at once. Its busy but its fun.

    Bringin any beer for trade?

Also I will add that Paddle for Pints might be worth a look. I think that tickets may be sold out but if not then it would be well worth a look. Its a 6 hour guided kayak trip down the Boardman River with stops at 6 different breweries. You get to see all of town from a cool vantage point and you get a good look at the beer scene and end out on West Bay. There are quite a few dates available for this if interested.

My grandparents live a few doors down. The peninsula is a great place to be in the summertime!

Another vote for Right Brain. They're 2 minutes from downtown and usually have some excellent stuff on tap that never makes it to distribution. We visit every time we're in town and are never disappointed.

I'm not much of a fan of North Peak, but if you're looking for a great beer bar, definitely check out 7 Monks, also downtown.

7 Monks can get way too noisy in the evening for me and the wife.

I have been impressed by the Filling Station and Workshop the few times I have been. Others might call them average, but the beers were clean, well made, and to style. That means a lot to me vs a beer that is out there but full of brewing defects.

We are going back up there next month, so I can retry some, and check out Rare Bird.

Seven Monk's for food/pints/crowlers to go, and definitely JP on the peninsula. Those would be the two stops I'd make if I were up there right now.
