Not so sure about this one. All they make are IPAs. We know how this ends...

Close, but not quite true. They also make a couple of porters and I'm pretty sure I remember trying a witbier and some kind of red ale.

How does it end? Tell me more?

Because Barley Browns is pretty one dimensional and not exactly struggling to make it.

They make a lot of great Double and Triple IPAs. Glad to have them here! And they bottle date!

    I respectfully disagree.

They make a wide variety of beers. Most focus on Pallet Jack and their bigger IPA's but their pale ales and most non-hop forward beers are in the upper echelon regionally and nationally for quality and taste. I'll put up their entire portfolio against any other Northwest brewery without hesitation.

Vanilla Porter and Don Vanucchi are under-rated. Knee Deep is legit, lots of hop heaviness, but Imperial Tanilla is great too.

A very simple (overly simple) check shows BB with 45 beers listed as current; 29 are styles other than IPA / APA/ IIPA.

Knee Deep has 46 listed, 20 are styles other than IPA / APA / IIPA / IIIPA / Belgian IPA.

So, yeah, Knee Deep is a bit more hop skewed it seems. That said, both make a variety and can't exactly be faulted for making stuff that people want to drink. If you want them to make more, skip the Pallet Jack next time and order a Breakfast Stout. ;-)

I saw Knee Deep bottles all over Spain. Kinda surprised me that they'd ship overseas.

I probably would have agreed with you if you'd picked any other BB beer.

    The Pallet Jack must flow.

These threads all inevitably end with dozens of claims about how the local product is much better so who cares. In this case I would agree, but I'm not really ragging on knee deep, just saying they aren't really providing something new.

They have strange distribution. Good thing they bottle date because those things collect dust in NC.

I believe I saw them in Budapest as well

Right, but look at the apex taplist. They might make some random stuff, but Oregon won't ever see it

Minor quibble - I think Knee Deep does offer something a little unique. They make a ton of 11%+ IIIPAs that are pretty readily available. They're pretty malty, sweet, boozy, particularly with a bit of age, but fresh are solid if that's what you're in the mood for.

It may not be something you're clammoring for, but when I think of Knee Deep I do think of that as their calling card.

Completely agree - that's their thing. I think I'm past the point where that's something that interests me, personally

Interesting. Almost sounds like the West Coast version of Southern Tier, back in the day. ST seems to have diversified their portfolio considerably over the past few years, but I remember back in the day when they were renowned for things like Unearthly (regular and barrel aged), Gemini, hoppe, etc. (all of which were high abv. hop bombs that were pretty decent when fresh, but quickly turned into sweet, boozy, malt bombs after a bit of age).

With family in Northern California, I have had and love a number of their beers. Do they do IPAs well.... Yes. But PNW does as well if not clearly better. I think their biggest problem will be their price point. They are $10-12 for a bomber (Citra pale ale is $8). Give me Breakside or others when next to each other on the shelf. I also noticed last time at 3 different places, all about 30 min from brewery, the bottles were 2
Months old. I passed. I will have one here or there if fresh, but no a staple.

Just to be clear, I'd never pay that amount for a bottled IPA. The draft prices at Apex were more than fair.

Ok, so 60/40 IPA to non-IPA for knee deep. High percentage of IPAs but certainly not "all they make" as you suggested. More importantly they are excellent IPAs from what I have sampled.

Anyway, the "all they make" argument doesn't really hold much weight for me. All de Garde makes is barrel aged and fruited sours. Lame.

I concur on the "all they make" thing. If you do something well, keep doing it. But my point was also that I like to see blanket statements bolstered by some facts. ;-)
