Same in Chicago. In fact 7$ a pint is pretty standard.

Craft is no more "overpriced" in bars than anything else is. Bars near me get $5.00 of a bottle of Budweiser.

Fair point - I guess I was looking at it as $7 is more than I was wanting to spend at that exact moment. To contrast that my brother ordered a pint of Lagunitas WTF? and it was $7 as well - not sure if that is a fair price or not.

Like a lot of people are saying, it's what the market will bear. Like any retail, bars will make a decision to carry something based on the expected volume and margin it thinks it can get. If the market won't bear that, it doesn't make sense for the bar to tie up inventory dollars in that product.

I'm excited when I see an IPA at $7 for an actual pint in Boston these days. Shit's outrageous.

Being in the business, I have both DF 60 minute and Devil Dancer on tap. I paid over one and a half times as much for the Devil Dancer and the barrel is half the size (over 3 times the cost). Just because you pay a lot more for a glass does not mean the bar is making a lot more profit...

Yeah. Who cares if I am getting a 30 or even a 15 cL pour, if it is of something like BCBS, etc. and only $5.

I really like that the op is suggesting that he wants 20 oz. of Devil Dancer. :grinning:

Pricing issues aside, this is the main reason places serve high abv beers in smaller portions. Check out this BAC calculator and see where a 20oz glass of Devil Dancver would get you. At my weight, I would be at .1 BAC, even one hour after drinking it, and it would take 2.5 hours for my BAC to drop below .08

I also suspect that much more care will be taken by the bar to serve smaller portions of high ABV beers in those states which have a dram shop law in place.

I love the concept of that calculator but I'm skeptical of the results. According to their math, I can slam 72 oz of 5% beer in an hour because I'm a 300 pound male and still be below the legal limit (.078 so not by much but....I would have assumed much higher)

I see the same thing in Rumson NJ, they only sell higher ABV beers in smaller glasses

Brick and Barley in Grand Forks, ND. And I have a typo in my original post, their ABV cutoff is 7%. I noticed it after the window to edit my post.

In eastern Kentucky I got a 20 ounce pour of Freshly Squeezed IPA for $2 during happy hour at a local restaurant.

And did I mention that was before my College/student discount?

Bottom line: Every keg is priced differently. Craft bars charge accordingly to ensure they make as close to the same amount of money per pour across the board. (We try to get back about 70-75 cents on every dollar spent.)

There are bars out there that don't know what the fuck they're doing and not charging enough....and there are bars out there that like to gouge for rare releases.

$11 dollars for 8 ounces is a bit of a gouge in WI. I charge $10 for 10oz and that is about right where I need to be. Can't go less.
