...You're annoyed by some Dbag at the bar, until he orders a craft beer. You then proceed to become best buddies with him for the next hour talking beer.

You, my friend, are 100% correct. However, the fact that you are worried about a misspelling on BA qualifies you as a geek in the more traditional sense.

You have traveled somewhere with the specific reason to go to a brewery/breweries in the area.

You have sent a stand-in that knows nothing about craft beer to a limited release because you were out of town or moved away.

You get annoyed when a worker at the beer store totally misinforms a customer asking for an honest beer recommendation--and then you proceed to help them out.

You've sent a spouse or sig other on vacation to a place that have a beer you want but doesn't distribute to your area.

You've sent in 10,000 labels of Duff beer to get an appearance by Duffman. Or is that alcoholic? Dah, well!

Your primary resource for hooking up with women is BeerAdvocate. Yes, we have a secret society within BA. No, you can't join.

You go on a date with someone because you share the same favorite Belgian cafe. When you marry that person, you plan the wedding around a trip to Ebenezer's. After the wedding, you proceed to go on beer-cations to Colorado and Oregon. During this time, you amass over 200 pieces of craft beer glassware. Oh, and the first thing you talk about in the morning with your spouse is when the next important beer event is happening...

Yeah, I don't drink beer from a glass because it's better for presentation and aroma, I do it to show others that I am better than they are.

No that is just preferential and at worst snobbish. Not on the geeky side of the spectrum IMO. Reviewing that beer immediately on the other hand...

Geek = nerdy knowledge to me, and I think that's the general connotation. It's the snob that won't buy beer that isn't fresh, won't drink good beer out of the bottle, etc.

A necessary requirement of being a beer geek is homebrewing experience. You learn way too much from this alone that is really not learned just by drinking and reading books. It's hard to get the same set of knowledge, and how that translates into evaluating a beer.

Beer Geek = Homebrewer, or at least former homebrewer.

We all understand the idea of pouring a beer into a glass, but insisting upon a glass and a pour can certainly be seen as boardering snobbish. There is a time and place for everything. Given that beer is a social beverage that most feel is best shared among friends, it can come off as elitist if you insist upon being handed a glass at a friends backyard barbecue.

When you hear the word "session" you cringe in anticipation of an argument among the more zealous beer enthusiasts... but you then join in anyway with your opinion.
