    New 3 Floyds Lager :confused:Sunday
I had planned on doubling down today by trying a Abt 12 for the first time, but was disappointed to find that my localish shop did not have any. They did have a few of these though which made up for it. Not only was I craving some lagers recently, 3 Floyds stuff tends to be sparce around here.

This is a very nice lager from a brewery that is obviously known for their hoppy beers. It borders on being a pilsner just a bit, but it is a very non bitter, smooth drinking Dort style. Grain forward with great flavor in a nice light body. I also got to enjoy it with some lightning in the background before getting chased inside.
    Final score of 3.99 http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26/50443/

Okay folks. Getting my mini-gose fest started.

    Here's Evil Twin's Mission Gose:

    4.27/5 rDev +6.5%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Bomber poured into an oversized snifter.

Lots of fizzy head. Forms a few fingers thick and fizzles and makes a good deal of noise. Settles into a bubbly lace before eventually dissipating almost entirely. The liquid is a glowing gold color with a brownish hue. It's a bit cloudy. Certainly a different color than I'm used to in a gose but it looks nice. 4.5

Man, that nose is potent...with herbal, plant-like aromas. Something earthy and fruity simultaneously. I'd almost say aloe vera but the bottle insists this is eucalyptus. Slight salt and wheat and malt sweetness. Faintly tart. This aroma definitely reminds me of something from the past but I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I was a koala in a past life. 4.25

Lots of salt here. They weren't shy with that. That herbal, plant-like aroma also figures heavy on the taste. This almost reminds me of kombucha with the tartness and tea-like flavor. Maybe that's what they were going after here? If so, well done. It's got a touch of some unidentifiable fruit flavor and a touch of lingering wheat. A nice medley of flavors and I gotta say, I like it. 4.25

I said it's salty and it really is. Definitely brings a dry quality to the beverage. Tartness is aplenty too and works in a fascinating way with the herbal tea and fruit flavors. Somehow they all come together in a mostly harmonious blend. There's even a bit of earthy spice which is peculiar but nice. 4.25

I didn't think I would like this. I almost didn't buy a bottle, but when it got distro to New Mexico I finally pulled the trigger. It's pretty damn weird but I like that and I really enjoy it. What I don't like is the price and the format. This should be a $10 4-pack or even 6-pack as opposed to a $10+ bomber. To my thinking, no gose belongs in a bomber.

Here's a picture of my Colonel Bohannon Old South Boiled Eggs Exemplar. It's possible to pretty it up, if need be. It's a long lost and needingly lost recipe. I was preparing some food today and this emerged from the mess. Occasionally there are just some bad eggs! We used it in some potato salad. Right now, I'm having a problem sending along that picture. I'll send it later.

    Didn't know I'd be back...

I've been all about pale ales lately, mostly DIPAs and IPAs. There has been a bunch of top-notch pales hitting Long Island fresh for the past few months, or maybe it's 'cuz I moved and have been hitting more stores. Anyways, this was a totally rando buy at a new store I was randomly near. Wasn't even in the mood for a stout per se, but I saw it all over WBAYDN recently, so I grabbed a bottle.

Went to see what score I gave it when I had it originally, and apparently this is a different beer than the W00tstout I had back in 2013. Overall, the beer delivers on the chocolate and pecan, and the bourbon barrel portion delivers a nice vanilla and booze character to everything - also has a thinning and elevating effect. Very nice. Better than remembered and expected. Official review: W00tstout 2015

    Cheers

Well later than usual today which is always later than most. Work day though and honestly I need a vacation. A little burned out and really haven't any significant time off since the passing of my brother last September. Good news I will be off the week of the 26th and will be visiting my other brother in Maine. I for sure will be making a stop on Industrial Drive- Austin Street, Bissel Bros, Allagash and Foundation. And to echo what @rgordon said earlier I sometimes don't know when to stop and wind up carrying on to no end. Over the last few years I've learned my lesson: if you have something to say just say it, because you may not have the chance tomorrow. And that's a positive really........And so we go to the liquid enjoyment that brings us all together.........
    CLOWN SHOES MANGO AMERICAN KOLSCH

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a dense white head that lasts for minutes. Nice rings of lacing cling to the sides of the glass.

Mango, yes MANGO and a citrusy orange and lemon grass aroma married with a bicuity malt and tropical/pineapple presence. Some hops also peek through the fruit.

Again mucho mango, Bitter orange, citrus, green hops and a peppery finish hit the back of the throat. Malts show less of a presence in the taste. Alcohol at 6.5% is well hidden. An easy drinker for sure. Kolsch? I would have enjoyed this a little more had there been just a touch more of sweet malt presence.

Nice refreshing carbonation with a dry thirst quenching finish. The beer was brewed for the warm weather and this is hitting the spot

Just a great summer beer. Nothing too complex. Just a refreshing beer with a touch of fruit that goes down mighty easily.
Came up with a new style name though- Colsch. It may not be true to style but its made to be consumed ice cold and not slowly. I'll buy this one again @ 4.99 a bomber and drink on a warm sunny Saturday afternoon the way they intended.
    Clown Shoes rarely disappoints...
And now from one who rarely breaks tradition I will in lieu of New Old Vinyl Sunday (seemingly for my entertainment only)
Just post a pic of my old man rescue cat Magic -15 yrs. Animals - gotta love them, they keep us sane. Have a great week and I'll catch up with you all soon. AND as always thanks for listening![IMG] [IMG]

What's up NBS? Another sporadic post for me in here, just can't seem to get myself consistently posting my proper reviews every Sunday but it is a goal of mine to become more regular. Anyhow, today's been a very relaxing (read: lazy) day for me and now my evening is off to a good start with a beer.

I started out my morning with a visit to my mom's (yes, I still like to see her a few times a month because I am a good son!), brought over my french press and some Secret Beach coffee from Modern Times that I picked up at their anniversary party last weekend. I have been converting my mom to good coffee for a while now as well as good beer (she loves Casey Dry Hopped Oak Theory, go figure). After our visit I came home, finished watching Mad Max: Fury Road, napped a bit on the couch, and now here we are!

This beer came to me as an extra in a trade I did for some Kuhnhenn brews...

    As reviewed:

A: Pours a rich, dark amber/mahogany with hints of ruby, settling into a deep amber hued brown. Appears sryupy in consistency with hardly a trace of head (with a hard pour). Lacing is loose and spotty as the beer goes down with a thin, foamy khaki collar.
S: All hops and caramel with an underlying note of booze and oak.
T: Lots of sweetness and booze bursting at the tip of the tongue, loads of American hops with piney/grassy/citrus/spice. Burnt sugar and caramel/toffee move more forward with notes of leather/oak/coconut/toast. Finishes extremely dry and bitter, lots of spicy hop flavors linger on the palate along with some big alcohol heat.
M: Slick and creamy, syrupy, full bodied. Carbonation works well for the style but is a bit low. Beer could be considered chewy at first but finishes so dry it thins it out.
O: Everything becomes more pronounced as the beer warms - hops, booze, caramel/malt - and I am enjoying it more in some aspects and less in others. Definitely a big American Barleywine here with nice barrel treatment but it's a bit hot still and for my tastes, a bit heavy on bittering hops.

Good afternoon venerable host cavedave and everyone else hanging here today. I was out working in the yard this afternoon until it got a little warm and sticky for my liking so I'm taking a break with a beer that a good BA, @mecmd sent me.

    MORPHEUS BREWING
    PEACE.WAR.TRUTH.LIE
    SESSION ALE
    5 % ABV
    4.35 RATING[IMG]

    Appearence - 4.5 - a nice golden hue
Smell- 4.25 - the aroma doesn't jump out at you but what's there is pleasent and tropical.
Taste - 4.5 - light and tasty with myriad tropical flavors. Reminds me of its big brother Transmigration of Souls with its light, clean flavor. It also has a decent malt backbone for a session ale, and is maybe the most balanced session I've had. Note to other brewers, don't try to drive the ABV and malt too far down, and you will have a better beer as a result.
Mouthfeel 4.25 - light, clean, but not watery. Well carbonated.

In closing, this is a nice "session" IPA, or a really good Pale if I'm calling it what it is. I would have this in my fridge all the time if possible. Well done, Orphueus, well done!

I was finally disappointed by a Lagunitas beer. Of course, disappointed still resulted in a 3.59 score, but this bested Gnarlywine for my least favorite. It tastes like someone hit my in the face with a bag of oranges. Very ripe and sour. It really drowns out most of the other flavors. I like it more towards the end after an adjustment period, but it is just too much citrus. This coming from a guy who can eat lemons. The problem for me is it comes across way more sour than sweet, and orange flavor should be the other way for to me

It is definitely a beer that lived up to the hype for me.

As expected smells like a pint of fresh berries followed by that classic funk.
The taste is sour funk up front followed by a not overwhelming dark fruit sweetness.
I do wish it had a bit more carbonation but that is really the only criticism I could make.

Definitely a beer I'm glad I took the time to seek out.

First time I've posted two new beers (it's nice to be home) on Sunday. Like many, I enjoyed the Abt 12 forum, and the oak aged version of St. Bernardus Abt 12 was/is new to me:

Ruby brown pour (SRM 24) with tight khaki head; good lace and cap in place as liquid reduces. 4.75

Sweet plums and fig aromas; whisper of Belgian yeast/coriander. 4.5

Raisin/Bread pudding, sweet plum flavors to start; a little oak in the middle which is not a distraction; sweet figs, pear compote, green apples and boozy fruit finish. 4.75

Creamy mouthfeel; a little drying at the end - the oak?; starchy plantains feeling coats the tongue, and I pick up banana and fruit juicy esters from yeast; I like. 4.5

Overall, I like the fruit juice feel with the alcohol bite on the tip of my tongue which sends me...outstanding! 4.5

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

750 ml bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada tulip

A: Brown with a tan colored head that disappeared pretty quick. Some decent amount of carbonation, little lacing, light comes through when held up, looks cloudy.

A: Belgian yeast, caramel, spices, picking up some oak, cloves, figs, prunes, some sweetness, not getting any of the bourbon but there is a nice oak presence, not getting any alcohol, smells complex with some depth.

T: Belgian yeast flavors, toasted caramel, spices, cloves, oak, slightly bitter, finishes with some strong dark fruit notes likes figs, prunes, lots of flavor, complexity, depth. The oak from the wine barrels comes through more than the bourbon flavors, not a bourbon bomb, a little heat from the alcohol.

M: Medium mouthfeel, slightly dry finish, a good amount of carbonation.

O: Very impressed, has a nice Belgian yeast characteristic up front, get some oak, lots of other flavors, a great sipping beer. I'm going to pick up another bottle or two for the cellar.

New DIPA Sunday: Neshaminy Creek Shape of Hops to Come.

Evenin' NBSers, with special salutations to all you hop bine huggers who love to get your taste buds assaulted with intense bitterness and flavors.

With all the heat today most of the chores ticked on the "honey-do" list were things needing to be done inside the house. In this area the Heat Index (some sort of combination of Humidy and Temperature) hit a "feels like" of 105 degrees. Much too extreme for my sensitive nature.

This evenin's new beer is the Shape of Hops to Come from Neshaminy Creek, a brewery just north of Philly that is rapidly moving up near the top of my list of locals that do quality brews. In the Mid-Atlantic forum there was all kinds of excitement generated about the July release of this beer (and its supposed to be around for several months with new batches being canned between now and December).

As usual my review of this beer is in progress and subject to revision until I finish the beer.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29021/133560/?ba=drtth

This is definitely a hop bomb of a beer and when fresh has loads of bitterness and lots of complex interplay among the other flavors from the hops being used. I'm definitely enjoying my first and have a few more on hand so I'll probably finish off one one of these beers about once a week for the next 3 weeks so I can revise my review if needed as the beer evolves a bit with time in the can. (I'm hoping that the rough edges will smooth out a bit as they do with beers such as Nugget Nectar.)

This appears to be the second year the beer has been brewed and it seems that the hop bill does change a bit from year to year even though the name does not. But I'm not 100% sure since I didn't have any of last year's offering.

For those wondering about the name of the beer its worth a bit of time to reflect on the similarity to the title of piano music below and where it came from. (One might even suspect that the brewer was a fan of a particular TV series.)

    Cheers, all!
