"Label came off" is the FedEx default answer.

FedEx: What exactly was in the box?
atpca: Well, it was a Home Depot box with a shipping label inside a FedEx pouch, taped down to the outside.
    FedEx: What was inside?
atpca: On the inside was a loose copy of the shipping label.
FedEx: What were the contents of the box?
atpca: Inside was another box, with a shipping label taped to the outside
FedEx: We'll need to know what was inside that box to identify it
atpca: Inside that was another copy of the shipping label and a styro shipper
FedEx: Sometimes these labels get lost...

I've never had it happen to me either. What I have had happen is this:

Fedex somehow misplaced a box I sent to Pittsburgh. The home office showed it to have been delivered, and my trading partner was asked to look around his house, talk to the neighbors, etc. After a couple of weeks of getting the run around from Fed ex, I finally filled out a claim form, and received a reimbursement check almost immediately. Just a couple days later, my friend in Pittsburgh received an email from fedex, advising him that his package would be delivered the next day. Near as we could tell (from checking the online tracker), my package had somehow ended up misdirected to Chicago. Have no idea why it took nearly two weeks for them to realize the mix up (not to mention admit it - they actually never did admit that they screwed up). Anyway, my friend finally got his beer, and I received a reimbursement check from fedex. I thought about tearing it up, but given the hassle they'd put me through, I went ahead and cashed it.

Long story short.... maybe don't give up hope just yet.

My experience with fedex is the people on day shift have somewhat of a clue of what's going on. Night shift no chance

I have never had a label come off of a box. I do not use the fedx plastic pouches. i just tep the hell out of the lable to the box. Not sure why Fedex even uses those stupid pouches. They know their machines can rip them off.
    Good Luck.

I had a friend ship me a box once from California with Bruery Reserve stuff - 12 bottle shipper. The label "came off" and they couldn't locate it and the box had been sitting at the warehouse for over two months before it miraculously re-appeared on his front porch, opened and re-sealed (different tape) with all contents inside. Hopefully you guys have a similar experience in your case.

I recently had a label come off. FedEx needed a description of the contents. I took a deep, deep breath & explained I trade with other internet foodies & that it was homemade marinades rebottled in collectors bottles ie Bruery Black Tuesday etc etc. She very nicely took down all of my info. I reiterated several times that I rebottle in collectors bottles which the person receiving the marinades should expect. I called FedEx again a day or two later & the person said, "This is alcohol you're shipping, right?" "No, homemade marinades." I responded. "Marinade," She repeated in a tone devoid of expression. "Yes, marinade, " I answered. "You're box will be delivered today," she promised. And it was.

That expansion is undeniably something of a streeetch. I figured it would work only if FedEx also wanted it to work, ie preferred to deliver my package. I cried my fingers & hoped that was the case, especially since the label being torn from the box was their mishap, not mine. Our seems that was the case. Still got all fingers crossed for future shipments...

    Sighhhh.
    It should read:
That explanation is undeniably something of a streeetch
    And
    I crossed my fingers
    And
It seems that was the case

Stupid Swype. Stupid cell phones. Stupid excuses, lol.

I don't doubt for a moment that Fedex knew exactly what was going on, and had a pretty good inkling as to the actual contents of your box. They'd have to be living under a rock not to know that huge quanties of beer and wine are shipped via their service every day. Fact is, they're making some pretty nice coin from the practice, and so I'm sure they'd like to maintain the status quo. My guess is that all they're asking for is some sort of plausiable deniability ("heh, the customer said it was a case of gopher and hedgehog tendernizing sauce, and who was I to say otherwise"), and as long as they have that, I'm sure they're more than happy to collect your money and ship your box.
