I see schlitz is available in 2 varieties the regular and the gusto classic formula. I've never seen anything that says gusto on it in a store so I'm wondering if both of these are still being made or is one obsolete? Is the one normally sold the regular formula?

The regular schlitz was discontinued back in 2010-2011. All schlitz currently sold now is the 60's formula. They dropped the classic 60's formula tagline on top of bottles and cans a year or so ago.

I think Schlitz was the first beer I drank. Not sure, cause I was probably about 5 when my grandfather gave it to me. Ahhh. Memories. Or lack there of.

Schlitz was one of the beers we would never drink forever ago, it was on the Iron City Level. It's Pbr in a different can and twice as expensive.

And a bit of Schlitz trivia: It was the official beer of the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY.

Actually, Schlitz was an Official Partner of the US Olympic Team. I don't know if there was an "official BEER'" of the Olympics but, Kirin was the "Official IMPORTED Beer" of XIIIth Olympiad. Scanning the "Official Final Report on The 1980 Winter Olympics"
    http://library.la84.org/6oic/OfficialReports/1980/orw1980v1.pdf ,
Kirin Brewery, Ltd. is the owner brewer listed as a sponsor.:grinning:

Man don't knock anything. Some beers, even though a lot of people may not like them, take you back to a place when you had them. That is just as good as craft beer sometimes. When I want to relive my college days, it is bud from a keg into a red solo. Schlitz reminds me of a guy that used to work for my dad, he would let me sample his every now and then and when I got older, I would buy him a few of these when I saw him at the package store. Drink for taste, or drink for memories

I have heard others state what you mentioned.

I hope that you do not take this too personally but I have difficulty believing this statement. Why would Pabst (who produces Schlitz) not advertise that the Schlitz they are producing in the 1960s Formula beer? Back when they produced both the 'regular' and the beers labeled as being 1960s formula they priced the 1960s formula higher; in other words charged a premium for the non-regular Schlitz beer. Are we now supposed to believe that they are selling their Schlitz beers at 'regular' prices but producing the beer per the 1960's formula?

There used to be a website for the 1960s formula Schlitz but that site is now gone.

Go the current website and there is zero mention of the 1960s formula: http://schlitzbrewing.com/

Some nonsense is going on here.

    Cheers!

I believe the schlitz in stores now is the 60s formula.

If you go to the Schlitz website it states:

    "Experience Timeless Taste.

Brewed in the USA since 1849, Schlitz defines timeless taste. Crisp and light with a faint sweetness, the beer that made Milwaukee famous is finished with a prime blend of Cascade, Mt. Hood and Williamette hops. This refreshing icon is for those who appreciate heritage and premium craftsmanship.

Cascade hops became available in 1971:

"Cascade is a variety of hop developed in the USDA breeding program at Oregon State University and released as an American aroma variety in 1971."

So riddle me this: how do you brew a beer per the 1960s formula using a hop that was not available until 1971?

    Cheers!

    Edit: And:

“Willamette hops are a hybrid of the English Fuggle hop that were released by the USDA in 1976.”

“Mt. Hood Hops was released in 1989.”

I wondered the same thing when Pabst dropped the krausening language from Old Style packaging several years ago. My email reply from Pabst customer service said that Old Style was still being krausening, but I found it hard to believe they would continue an expensive brewing step for an AAL and not at least mention it.

Schlitz!!! My first beer at about 14/15 years old. About 1965. Haven't had any formula in more years than some of you are old. It was a great beer before they changed the formula in the '70's. If that '60's formula is true, it would be good. To me. Memories.

The beer tastes great. And I remember the cheapened formula. Schlitz is good. Much better than the cheapened version.

12oz Cans come with the Pabst "cheap" formula.
16oz cans and 12oz bottles come with "Gusto".

In my opinion, the 12oz bottles taste more like pre-pro than your standard Pabst product. Which, in turn, probably accounts for its higher ratings.
