While I was out in Wisconsin yesterday for work I managed to pick up two 4-packs of Pseudo Sue. After cracking into one, I tasted a lot of citrusy flavor but little to no hops whatsoever. (Please take into consideration these were bottled two weeks ago, and this was my first time trying Pseudo Sue)

I know a lot of people compare this beer to Zombie Dust, which I've had many times, so I was baffled to not get a punch of hops to the face (for an APA at least).

Is this how it usually tastes? Was this a bad batch or was it stored improperly?

Please let me know your thoughts. Cheers!

The Citra hops that are in Pseudo Sue provide a citrusy flavor, so if you got a citrusy flavor, you are getting the hops. Do you mean that you didn't get a lot of bitterness? It's been about a year since I had Pseudo, and I don't remember there being very much bitterness at all.

The general consensus is that it is not as good since they started contract brewing it through Brew Hub in FL. (and sold in 4-pks), instead of at the brewery in Decorah (bombers). People have said that each successive Brew hub batch has been getting closer to the original but it is not quite there yet. I have only had the Decorah bombers so I can't give you you my personal thoughts, but it was an amazing beer every time I have ever had it.

I remember not liking as much as others it in bomber format before the changes. I got the same as you - lots of citrus, but very one dimensional and not much bitterness at all. I feel like this would be a great beer to introduce pale ales to someone who is so-so on bitterness. I'd take Zombie Dust over Pseudo 100 times out of 100, and it's not really close for my personal tastes. I can see why people love it, though.

Contact the brewery. They'll want to hear about any quality issues and are best equipped to provide a response.

That might be the word I'm looking for. I just didn't feel like the flavor packed a punch like Zombie Dust did. It reminded me almost of a Citrusy Wheat Ale in a way, where as Zombie Dust reminds me of an IPA.

I bought a ton 2 weeks ago and every single one was as amazing as always. Mine were 2 weeks old as well.

I would say that it is not a bad batch. Being someone who does not like too much bitter, I actually enjoy both Zombie Dust and Psuedo Sue more for their balanced profile. I personally didn't get a smack of hops from Zombie Dust either.

Missed that in your original post, sorry. Could be improper storage, burnt taste buds, a bad batch, or other factors.

I think this is a question of preference. I don't know why people compare ZD and Sue other than the fact that they are both Citra hopped pales. I think the comparison pretty much stops there. Citra Session IPA from GF is completely different than both beers as are many single hopped Citra beers. PseudoSue was a huge letdown for me while King Sue met the hype for me personally.

Or different preferences... I agree with OP. PseudoSue is kind of a one dimensional pale that lacks bite.

I had Sue on tap at their brewery a few months ago and I don't remember it being very bitter at all. It was super citrusy and hoppy in aroma, but all in the flavoring.

I agree with you 100%. I think my issue was that I was expecting it to be almost identical to Zombie Dust. Personally, it reminds me more of Gumballhead than anything.

I think a lot of the comparison is that they are the two highest rated pale ales. They are not all that similar all though I love both beers.

The first 2-3 times I had it were bombers and the last time I tried it was in the 12oz format. I personally like PS way better than ZD but I agree the 12oz version is not the same as the bombers. Just lacks the overall flavor and profile IMO. I agree it doesn't taste as "hoppy" as ZD but I like the PS better.

I've had the inverse reaction. Had multiple batches of Pseudo and got a ton of citrus punch. ZD was pretty mellow and maliter. I prefer Pseudo.

For more info, check out the TG Appreceation Thread in the midwest forums... there has been endless discussion on this topic. Long story short, 12 oz florida sue is not nearly as good as the previous iowa bomber sue... but getting a little better each iteration. They are making sue in bombers again in IA and they have their head brewer back which seems to have helped as well (he had quit for a while and now returned). I think I touched on the major points... funny to see this discussion occur on the main forum
