I've only started drinking in the last couple years and I followed the advice to try a lot of different beers to see what I'd enjoy. The only problem is when you aren't familiar with a style, at least in my case, you're never quite sure if you don't like the style or if a particular brewer's take on a style is what you don't like. Along my journey there were a couple styles I was close to putting on the back burner until I had something that change my opinion of a style's potential from "meh" to "More, must have more." and I wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences? For me two beers come to mind:

Sierra Nevada Summerfest: I was extremely close to deciding I just didn't like pilsners after some disappointing encounters with the style. That is until I encountered Sierra Nevada Summerfest which almost made my eyes pop out of my head thinking, "Damn, this is tasty!".

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis: I was close to writing off hefeweizens, I'd heard tales of notes of clove and banana and general tastiness but it had eluded me in my experiences until I had this beer. Once again, I was close to thinking, "Must not be for me." and then my eyes were opened.

Hm... I didn't really intended this to be a love note to Sierra Nevada.

I had a similar experience experience with Pils - I'm generally not the biggest fan of that style but I do really like Schönramer's interpretation.

If you're actually looking at German styles I'd give you the recommendation to look for affordable imports like Weihenstephan or Schneider Weisse - they're generally accepted as pretty good representations of particular styles.

So far I've had good and less good (rarely bad) interpretations of most styles, though.

Thanks, I'll have to keep an eye out. My go to liquor store doesn't really have a decent selection of German imports though. I may need to just bite the bullet and drive a few extra miles in search of a better store one of these days.

If you really want to delve into those styles you can have a look into some of the Europe threads in regards to Germany, there's quite a few Americans who have lived here and talk quite a bit about their favorite German styles available in the U.S.

Boulevard Tank 7. Wasn't a huge fan of the style after Sofie, Hennepin and some Perenial stuff. Didn't love the Brett or spicy character of those. Tried Tank 7 on a trip and was blown away. Opened me up again, and now I,ms napping up as many Saisons as I can, in all style. Now I love Brett!

Left hand milk stout, I didn't like stouts before I had this beer. It showed me that there is more to stouts than just the Irish dry stouts.
Chimay blue, I had rochefort 10 and didn't think it was very good, but I loved chimay. With how much love rochefort 10 gets I will be revisiting it soon.

I do think age can make quite a bit of difference with these trappists. I remember having a 2011 vintage (I think) of Chimay Blue in the 0,75 bottle in 2013 and I remember having a 2014 in 33cl bottle last year. I'm pretty sure I remember the former tasting differently.

I'll have to take a look. I feel like there may be a German beer buying spree in my future.

I was never too big on saisons/farmhouse ales but once I tried Boulevard's Tank 7 I can say that style of beer has been "saved" for me as you put it hahaha.

    Brown Ale - Prairie Okie
    Stout - Lakewood Temptress
    Porter - Shake Chocolate (Nitro)
I never really hated pilsners but after having KC Pils, I feel like I somehow reconnected with the soul of American beer prior to, say, 1980.

Live Oak HefeWeizen. Before I was into craft I would get a Hefe when I was out with friends. It was different but never really turned me on. After getting into craft beer, Hefe just didn't seem to have much personality to me, until I tried Live Oak's. Great beer great personality. They do a great job in Austin

Goose Island Blue Line. Would never give a pils the time of day until this recent release. It delivers where most examples of this style come up short, it actually really is a hoppy Pilsner.

Petrus saved sour ales for me.
If I hadn't gone back to it and enjoyed it, I'd probably have washed my hands of the whole genre by now.

You'll love it. It's draft only, and only found within Chicago city limits. I believe it's only a summer seasonal too.
