The nation-wide phenomenon with #properglassware of course!

I love root beer so definitely was looking forward to trying this. Looks like one, including the head that fizzles quickly like soda. Aroma is so nailed, pure root beer. Flavor upfront is root beer, finish a bit harsher, like spoonful of sugar. Verdict is I like it but one or two would be it before switching things up.

    Greetings friends,
Thanks again to everyone for their effort in making this so much fun.
I spent last night with dear old friends going back to the first grade at Sternberger Elementary. We were all boys in the 50s, growing up in this idyllic setting. My best friend Steve is a crusty old dude that I love. I was in first grade with Scott- a genuine musical prodigy- who is ready to embark on a project of true historic importance. He plays every type of horn, plays piano, guitar, sings....and sleeps a lot during the day! I will keep you posted.
One good friend, Bob, is dying from a multitude of ailments. He was just taken off of the liver transplant list because of these issues. It is really tough when a friend ages 20 years in a year. Be thankful for good health.
The Brew Kettle Kitka Chocolate Coconut Milk Stout was awesome! I do not like coconut, but this beer integrates everything so perfectly that it worked for me. Super smooth, relatively low in alcohol, and I wish I had more. Velvet texture, gorgeous aromatics, pretty as a picture, and down the hatch without effort.
Thanks again to @WesMantooth for his enormous generosity.
I chased this butterfly around for 30 minutes!
As a 15 year old this song was meaningful. It still is.

Tecate Michelada Diablo has a very fizzy audible quality, but no head and no lacing. The appearance is of tomato juice with racing bubbles. Aroma is of tomato juice with possibly some lager in the background. Flavor is exactly that, too, with mild spice and noticeable salt. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Tecate Michelada Diablo finishes mostly dry. This is not a drink with surprises. If you’ve tasted tomato juice, you’ve tasted this, essentially. I think it was well executed, for what it is.

I picked that one up about a year and a half ago, and was similarly impressed. The last few years, much of my international New Beer choices have only been satisfying in geographical terms, not in flavor ones (got a Vietnamese lager on deck that I fully expect to suck), but that beer delivered.

A great Perle-y morning to you, procurers of pilsners and hawkers of helles. It’s going to be a scorcher (and a muggy one) in NWNJ. I already can’t breathe outside. This is the perfect day to session something German, but alas, I only have one bottle. The newest offering from my favorite NJ brewery (that people have heard of) River Horse, came courtesy of beer karma. A free 12 oz. bottle of their Cherry Berliner Weisse. Thank you Chris of Byram Shoprite Liquors.

    Without more ado:

River Horse Cherry Berliner Weisse, poured with relish (the feeling, not the condiment) into a pilsner glass

Sight: A stark white, dense head sits like the foam on top of a latte. Underneath the head the body boasts a grapefruit-like tone, replete with a nice yeasty haze. Yup, I swirled the last few ounces and gradually poured everything out. The head settles down to a small but persistent cap.

Aroma: Faint cherry and cracker-like combination. It’s very subtle. Can one smell “tartness?” Fruity esters. Maybe it’s lactic acid I perceive? No hops to speak of.

Taste: Tart cherry, a touch of sourness, nice malty, cracker-like support. It’s dry and a little woody. Were there oak chips involved?

Feel: Light to medium-light. A bit of scrubby carbonation, refreshing, cleansing. I could drink this all day- that’s sort of the point.

Overall: Pleasant, easy to drink. Great mouthfeel. Not exactly traditional, but a wonderful fruity offering for summer consumption. River Horse provides a tasty alternative to their Summer Blonde. I love the hippo-wench with the blond braids, corset and red lipstick. I bet this would be great on draft.

Music pairing: Something German, but a little non-traditional:

Another cool, cloudy day here in Maine, although it's supposed to be warming up in the next few days.
I played golf in the rain today. It was never heavy enough that we wanted to quit, but it was certainly an annoyance.
I'm home with my wife, and drinking Clown Shoes Mango. I am enjoying this "American Kolsch."

In a snifter the beer is a hazy gold color with just a tiny head.

The aroma is sweet fruit and pepper.

Mango and orange taste, with a little bit of habanero heat.

A nice beer for a hot summer day. Unfortunately, that's not here today.

Greetings all! I picked the right day of the weekend to stay home and get stuff done; yesterday was our beach day, so not much beer drinking involved. It was fantastic, though, regardless . Yeah, it's a hassle packing up the car, driving the hour+ it takes to get there, lugging all the gear to your spot, and all that- but the kids were so happy enjoying the surf, my wife was more relaxed than she's been in about a year, and I got in such an invigorating swim in the brisk water that my spirits perked up considerably.

Still, there's a whole list of items needing to not be put aside any longer. Last weekend we were also away for my older son's college orientation, so it's time to take care of some yard work and gardening. Which brings me to my first of the day-

    A post- lawnmowing beer
    [IMG]

Bronx Rye Pale Ale. Probably not the best beer for this context after all, because this sucker means business. A few things hit me all at once- intense bitterness, bold resiny hoppiness, and a mouthfeel that manages to be moderately full and smooth despite all that. There's an almost contradictory yin/yang character tying it all together- it's incredibly powerful with concentrated flavors and an in-your face assault, yet it's also a real pleasure to drink. The finish turns out to be more dry, interesting and complex than the initial blast lets on. I'm getting orange peel, toasty bread, spiciness, a hit of spruce, and a long, lingering clean bitterness. In the end, Bronx Rye Pale Ale grabbed me by the collar and will not be ignored, so I may as well take a bit of a break anyway; sometimes you just gotta listen when the beer speaks. Very good stuff indeed, and the best Rye beer I've had in a long while. Solid A (4.5).

    Enjoy your Sundays, folks!

Saw a four-pack of pint cans when in Lexington last weekend for about the same price as a bomber in Pennsylvania and decided to give it a shot...

Solid brown color and about a finger of tan-tinted head with a vigorous pour.

Nutty, roasted-malts aroma, which carries over to the taste. There's also some hops bitterness and a little astringency.

Fairly thick-bodied, with plenty of carbonation despite the modest head.

Pretty one-dimensional, but it delivers as a middle-of-the-road brown. Sometimes that's just what I'm looking for, and I might drink more of it if it were local, but it's not worth paying a premium. Think I was expecting something a little bolder given such bold can art.

Since I'm off my meds I can finally go back to doing all the fun stuff like fitness, drinking beer and coffee I'll also do another one here. Today I'll go with another Belgian, the Ballast Point beers are reserved for tasting sessions with friends and the rest of my haul is coming in tomorrow (very stoked to have some Orval again). And since I haven't been here for a while I'm gonna wait until my dinner is done, so I'll be back in here in about 20-30 with this fella in the glass:

Hey there, NBSers! I'm back with my second brew of the day, one of the only GI "sisters" that I hadn't yet tried: Juliet American Wild Ale.

I was a touch worried that, at about 2 years old, the Brett character might mask the flavor of the beer when fresh; I strive to review beers like this fresh first, and then revisit with age. Alas, that didn't happen for this beer...

...and it really didn't matter. It's very typical of American Wild Ales on the nose and the palate: sharp, sour, tart, and fruity. The red wine barrel aging comes through cleanly, albeit in a supporting role. There's a vinegary sourness not unlike a Flanders red. The berries are well represented.

As to the Brett, there's an underlying mustiness, but it doesn't seem to be dominating this beer nearly so much as the sour notes - and it is mouth-puckeringly sour.

All in all, a very pleasant brew, and one where I feel the age definitely helped the flavors develop, without allowing the Brett to dominate.

How highly carbonated were your beers at 2 years? When I opened this beer it produced a very loud pop and I was immediately concerned about gushing. The opened beer did not gush but the beer was extremely carbonated as you can see in my photograph.

    Cheers!

    Hello, NBS!
I'm enjoying a beer so new today I had to add it to BA! It's always enjoyable to see a brewery successful and Bottlehouse just tripled their capacity up to 7 barrels! Unfortunately I don't have any sort of bottle label/other image for this... but I found it on tap at the local Heinens grocery chain- the first time I've seen one of their beers distributed
The beer is the Bottlehouse Lupulin Shift 2X IPA
Fascinating that I just added it to BA and its BA page is already the #1 Google result searching for "lupulin bottlehouse"!
As for the beer itself, the DIPA marketplace is quite full but this makes a welcomed addition. It's got a nice pine-forward hop profile with malts that are balanced, more prevalent on the palate than nose. Nothing particularly special, just solid and well-made.
    Cheers!

16 oz can dated 5/13/15 poured into a pint glass

A- A slightly hazy golden straw color with a two finger white head/

S- Citrus, some lemons, some sweeter fruitiness, herbal/floral hoppiness, very tea like.

T- Upfront the taste is not too aggressive, toasted malts, some citrus, floral, the finish however is piney and aggressively bitter to a point where I feel it is more like an IPA.

M- Smooth, light to medium body.

O- When I saw this was an English Bitter I was not expecting such a bitter finish in a 4% beer, I thought it would be more balanced, but I still really enjoy this beer. Lives up to the high quality I have had with everything else from Surly. (697 characters)
