Hi BAs, I'll be staying near the Texas Medical Center (Baylor College of Medicine campus) for about a week this August and I was wondering if anyone from the Houston area could suggest any good places to make some mix-n-match six packs, ideally with local fare. I'll be too busy with work to go out and explore (or even to drink out) so my plan is to simply "collect" as many local beers (in single bottles or cans) and take them with me home to PA so I can enjoy them there. I found a place online called D & Q Mini-Mart (806 Richmond Ave, Houston, TX 77006) which apparently lets you build your own 6-packs. Also am I right that H-E-B supermarkets let you do that too? Do they carry local craft beers? Any other decent places? Thanks in advance!
D&Q & Specs are the best for singles. Specs might have more larger format bottles, but you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. HEB will have singles, but typically the mix and match is just old bottles from cases they don't sell. Also check out Premium Draught, Growlers Wine & Beer to Go, and Jugs. The various Whole Foods will have you covered as well.
Thanks champ103. Much appreciated! I'll check as many of these places as my schedule allows. Thanks again!
You'd be hard pressed to find a better selection than the D & Q you mentioned or the Spec's at 2410 Smith St., just down the road from D & Q. We are the largest Spec's in town and do our best to have the best selection we can. This includes our "Make your own 6pk" selection. As Champ mentioned we also have a wide variety of 22oz/750ml format singles and a decent amount of TX items only available at Spec's in Houston. Stop by both places. Say hi when you're here?
I have to be the third one to prof the Spec's on Smith. It is close to where you are at, and while there, there are a ton of restaurants/bars to try out
Oh, and by the way it is good to see @TheGentleman posting here again Go hit him up at the Smith St Specs and he will talk your ear off.
And, OP, when you do check him out, tell him what you like, ask for a recommendation or two, and go with what he says.
Appreciate all of the kind words kids. I intend to be somewhat active on the Southwest forums for the foreseeable future. Twitter is the quickest way to get my attention, but I will also check here and post updates as often as I can.
