Seems like a no-brainer to do the release silently to me, I'm not sure why more breweries don't do releases that way. Not so much from a standpoint of "hooking up the locals," but more just because who would want to deal with that kind of shitstorm if you didn't have to? I know if I worked at a brewery then I would avoid it if any way possible. Seems like this method has been working well for them recently, so if it ain't broke then don't fix it IMO.

As for the beer itself, the cognac one sounds the best to me personally.

No but it's got two barrels on it, whereas the others just have the one. Similar to last year.

I don't have any idea what it is, just saying it's got two barrels on the label like last year's DB one did. I'm pretty sure last year's didn't spell out "double barrel" on it either, but correct me if I'm wrong on that.

A lot of people had been saying double chocolate, whatever that is. So maybe it's that?

Last years just had both barrels labeled, pretty sure they read Bourbon and Rye.

Exactly, that's what I thought I remembered as well. So are you saying that the barrels in that picture don't say anything on them? I can't tell on that one from the resolution of the pic.

All I was trying to say is that while they may not be the same types of barrels used last year for DB, I was thinking that based on the pic it was some sort of DB blend again this year. But maybe that's not a correct assumption.

Pritchard's sells a product that's called "Double Chocolate Bourbon", the beer was aged in barrels that held that specific spirit.

So sad to see arrogance turn a once unanimously loved brewery into another above average place people will not go out of their way for their releases or beers. So sad

Not to mention the cash Charston is missing out on.

Westbrook will do what they think is best for the brewery and its customers. Whether that is a silent or announced release is their choice. Get over it.

Obviously, you need to go to Westbrook every day for the next couple of weeks if you want a chance at a pint of BA MC. Be sure to only buy year-round beers, that way the folks working there will know you're not just hunting for whalez. Make it a point to chat up the bartenders and brewers hanging around, but, for the love of god, do not under any circumstances mention Mexican Cake--that's a surefire way to get them to tap it right after you've left just to spite you.

When they randomly decide to put on BA MC (I hear they strictly adhere to the Mayan Beer Release Calendar), make a point of ordering something different first. After you've had one or two core lineup beers, you can order a pint of MC, but act cool about it. "Oh, is that something new? Well, I guess I might as well give it a shot..." Drink it with a smile on your face, then order another year-round beer just to hammer home that you were absolutely NOT there for the Cake.

Don't you even think about logging that beer into Untappd or BA. If word gets out online that they've started putting MC variants on tap, the place will be swarming with touristy harpoonists quicker than you can correctly pronounce Lichtenhainer while drunk.

But seriously though, it seems like a major pain to deal with "release events." I'm not saying that those special events aren't fun, but they have got to take a lot of planning and logistics to run smoothly. At this point, I don't think Westbrook needs the publicity that such an event can offer and I don't think they'll have any problem quickly selling their most coveted beers without advance notice.

Yeah, I'm sure it is a pain to look forward to the beer all year and miss out, but there are plenty more "fish in the sea."

I'm sure everyone will be freaking out over the Pappy but the Cognac is going to be delicious.
