I am surprised about how little Jever is talked about on this site. It defines the German Pilsener just as Pilsner Urquell does the Czech style. When fresh it is clean, hoppy and world class.

Why does this beer fly under the radar? I didn't even know it existed until half a year ago.

In part because it's not as widely distributed as Pilsner Urquell; in part because by the time it gets to North America (where most BA members live) it's not so fresh and often skunked right to hell. I've had it in Germany, and it's great. But by the time it reaches North American shores, I find it's a shade of its former self.

Why do all pilsners fly under the radar? Your answer is in that answer.

It's a beer that's waaaaaaay better on tap in North America. Fresh, it's delicious.

This is picking nits but I'd say Jever is a bit hoppy to define German pilsner. I'd pick one like Wolters or Kulmbacher. But I do love me some Jever.

Some people in the BA community think this beer isn't worthy and it's actually way cooler to drop boulders on it with a forklift than sing its praises.

Boy, if I had a dollar for every time I posted in BA about Jever I would be a rich man.

    Cheers!

Fresh is the defining key word here.

Not Jever specifically, but just had a Konig Pilsener a couple hours ago. I feel that this style of beer gets no love, which is sad because it is quite excellent.

I've had it out of a bottle - awful, skunked, and metallic, and out of a mini-keg - light, crisp, and refreshing. Packaging is critical

How fresh can an exported Pils possibly be considering Fest beers were brewed a month ago? I'll reach for an Old Mecklenburg every time that's 2 weeks old.

Because it's not an IPA, stout, or sour. Those are the only beer styles that matter on Beer Advocate.

Sort of. The last sixer of bottles I had was taken from a closed case, and it was fantastic. Light is the enemy, in that case.

I have never seen canned Jever. For the bottles they use a 1 year best by timeframe.

    Cheers!

    It isn't American made.

Don't we all agree that Americans make German styles better than the Germans?

My favorite German pilsener. For all the aged IPAs I seem to find at Total Wine, the Jevers I pick up there are surprisingly fresh tasting. I drank a lot of it in northern Germany years ago, so I have a notion of what it's supposed to taste like.

This actually seems to be working out as Summer of the Pils for me this year. I am buying old favorites and seem to keep trying several new ones. I've even found a new on to put in my top 5 list. I do agree though that well crafted pilsners get very little love in general on this site.
