Lots of talk around here lately on hazy Northeast hop bombs. I seen the other day on social media that Tired Hands does a Lactose IPA that's conditioned on pineapple.

Anyone tried lactose in an ipa? That creaminess may just work out?!

Might make sense to use lactose if also adding fruit, since fruit (such as pineapple) tends to be extremely tart and ferment out very dry. About 4-6 oz lactose in 5 gallons seems about right just to take a little of the edge off the fruit tartness. Under no circumstances should use use more than 8 oz in 5 gallons in an IPA. Probably don't need any at all, actually. But a little wouldn't hurt in a fruit IPA.

I had Apocalypse Cow years ago... I like dry IPAs.

If you're looking for a thicker mouthfeel, try adding flaked oats, wheat, Carapils, and/or rye. The added proteins from those grains will give you a creamier beer without making it so sweet that it tastes like it was brewed by Southern Tier.

I don't get 'em at all. Thanks to Three Floyds and IPAs being very easy to sell, there are a bunch of Chicago area brewers making them. I still can't figure out why and how IPAs are benefited by it at all. It's just gross and needs to stop immediately.

Lactose beers make me super loose in the caboose. So I don't brew with lactose. :flushed: I can eat standard dairy products without issues. If I could use lactose, it wouldn't be with an IPA. So there's that...

One of the nice things about homebrewing is you can use whatever ingredients you want no matter how out of place they seem to others. I don't expect there to be many people here that share your interest in brewing a lactose IPA.

The problem with lactose, aside from flatulence and a night on the couch, is that is doesn't add much sweetness, just body. That's not something I'm looking for in an IPA. I feel like the range of body/sweetness from malt alone is more than adequate to balance the bitterness.

Omnipollo makes a smoothie IPA, they Inspired Tired Hands to make one too. I like them. Rock on.

this is one of my favorite monthly releases that FFF does. They definitely make it work but it's also got a massive malt backbone and is ridiculously hoppy. i see bottles floating around now, but it's a may release so YMMV at this point.

There is something about taking creaminess to the max and tropical hops/fruit that work. Had a beer from TH that had pineapple and cocconut and lactose and wow.....really set fire to my loins.

I'm interested in how this turns out. Last week, I had a local coconut/mango IPA (Southern Grist) that spoke to me. What yeast are you using?
