A good conversation about some beers that were pretty much brewed to troll their customers and/or the beer world at large. That doesn't mean they're all bad -- just... their intent was less about putting together an amazing product.

(Full disclosure: Along with the author, I came up with the idea for the post, but the execution was all him and I still think it holds up when removing my minimal early involvement)

Yup. Spicy Nachos and Justin Blåbær both qualify, for different reasons -- as do several others.

I don't understand what Billy Beer is trolling. Jimmy Carter? Seems odd.

    I liked the read.

Kinda glad I've only had one from the list... the Ground Control from Ninkasi. Had no idea what space yeast meant - it was never a sell-point for me - the beer was actually really good, but too expensive... (*space yeast expenses* :astonished:?)

I luv that Bell's made the Pumpkin Peach...

Question: Is Ghostface Killah hotter than Stone's Crime or Punishment?

I've only (unfortunately) had Crime, but couldn't even get through it. Saw a commenter on the post also brought up Crime/Punishment, and definitely think either could qualify (though no idea if they're hotter than Ghostface).

Fun article. Seems sadly refreshing to follow an article link on here without dismissing it almost immediately with extreme prejudice.

My first thought was that Brown Note was a troll beer but on second thought, I don't believe they think they did anything special.

Shocktop End of the World Midnight Wheat was specifically designed to troll drinkers on the whole Mayan calendar thing. Even went as far as to host a big party where the killed all the lights at midnight to simulate the world ending.

Billy sat around a gas station drinking beer with his buds. He latched onto his brother's coat tails for a small moment in the sun. For some reason I still have a full can. It's a decent historical piece if nothing else. Billy's been dead for years, but I heard President Carter the other day on Diane Rehm's show and at 90+ the guy is utterly brilliant. He is an intellectual giant amongst us.

Maybe it's my age and I'm not entirely familiar with what is and is not 'trolling'. But would a business really just waste resources (time, space, supplies, labor) to make a beer that they have no intention of anybody liking? Seems like that's just a waste of time and reputation. Or is one man's troll another man's tie in with current events/local cuisine and resources etc?

Yeah, I think the whole point was to get Billy a few bucks.

If the whole series of Rogue "Pink Death" beers don't answer that question for you...

A couple months back the head brewer at Green Bench Brewing ridiculed the Tampa Bay Area scene for "not understanding" his beers and their lack of an educated Palate. Said his beers would do better in places like Denver, Portland, VT, ect. Well, this didn't go over so well, even other brewers didn't like it, so Cycle decided to troll him in a not-so-subtle way when they released their Pallet series (note the different spelling, which was intentional)

From Cycle's FB page the day of release: "Today is the apparently worst kept secret release of our new series of beers, the pallet. We feel craft beer isn't beyond anybody and there is no such thing as a superior set of taste buds, just different ones. Pallet 1 and Pallet 2, the first a coffee cinnamon barrel aged imperial stout and the second a blend of our favorite Prichard's whiskey barrels, single malt whiskey, rye whiskey and Tennessee whiskey.
    Cheers to your pallet!"

Rogue's Sriracha beer belongs here. What a mediocre, overpriced piece of crap. If my wife hadn't picked it up because she loves Sriracha I wouldn't have even tried it. To this day the coolest thing about that beer was the bottle itself.

Pallet 1 and 2 refers to a comment made by Green Bench brewer about how Tampa Palates weren't refined enough for his creations.

Anyone remember the "Hater's Tears Gose" that Pizza Boy created a fake label for after they had some fans on Facebook complain about the price of their Raspberry and Blackberry sours? I think they actually brewed it and served it at the restaurant, but I can't find the label any more--I'm guessing it was deleted.

Anyway, that was a pretty troll-tastic beer. They were literally making fun of potential customers.

To gnome is to love 'em, except when they live in Gnome, Alaska, or is that Troll, Alaska?

I think a proper troll beer would have to be made with dark magic, aged in Moria, and served at the Prancing Pony on Troll Night.
