Do we really hate over priced bottle shops?

I know the knee jerk reaction is YES! One does not like to get ripped off on a product that is cheaper somewhere else. And no one likes a greedy owner that doesn't care about his craft beer patrons.
But what about the counter argument... Higher mark up means a higher probability the shop will have a bottle you are dying to try. There are lots of beers that never spend any time on the shelf because the second they are released the hoarders (I am one, btw) come in and scoop them all up before most people get a chance. Sure doing bottle limits help, but factoring price into supply and demand is better economics, right?

My first impulse is to totally agree, but part of me thinks that the hoarders will hoard no matter what the mark-up is, since the difference in price from one shop to the next isn't generally that dramatic.

Depends on how much we are talking. If they are charging $12 for a bottle of KBS then they can keep it. If it's $40 for a bottle of fou then I won't mind one bit.

Plus like you said. Sometimes the higher bottle count will help it stay on the shelf longer so you don't have to drop everything you're doing to go get a beer.

For me, the question is price difference. If store A has a beer $.75 more than store B and A is in a nicer part of town, I'm not terribly mad about it, maybe they have higher rent costs or whatever. If store A is $4 more expensive than store B, I'm going to be annoyed that the store is just gouging customers.

I think about this especially while traveling to other states and overseas to Belgium. There are a lot of beers I would pay way more for than what the locals would. Because I desire them to a greater extent and willing to pay more for them.

For everyday beers I don't like it at all. If it is a big ticket item and they can price enough people out that I don't have to struggle to grab something then I'm all for it.

These shops kill themselves because they dont make their money off the super rare stuff. The money is made off of quantity of regularly available stuff that people buy weekly. If those bottles are overpriced, people will shop elsewhere for their regular beer and just swing buy to poach the rarer stuff occasionally.

Yup, I really hate them. I'm trying really hard to think of a reason not to, but the more I think, the more I realize how much they suck.

@October have you been to Hal's Bottle Shop in the North Hills? Has great beers that can't really be found anywhere else around PGH, but unfortunately I have decided to boycott them because of such high prices.

For your everyday bottles that are mass produced I would not want over pricing to happen. But the special/limited release bottles it's a different story.
Would love to see KBS or Bourbon County beers sit on the shelf for over a month, instead of having to wait in line for the release. If that means that they charge 2x as much as now then so be it.

I'm in the haters category...I'd like to see more limit of "x" bottles per customer. Happened to stop by a store the other day and grabbed a bottle of stickee monkee that was 1 per customer. I think that gives everyone the best chance and eliminates the hoarders, which sorry, but are complete douchebags. At the end of the day its about enjoying beer, and the ones that swoop in and clean out a stock for themselves is just selfish IMO.

I think of it this way I am happy to shop at say Nordstrom because they offer better customer service and have a better chance of having what I want in stock than say Macy's. I know that walking into Nordstrom I am going to pay more but I made that choice. To me if a higher price bottle shop is going to have the beers I want in stock and fresh and I get better customer service than a big box store that offers almost 0 customer service and has older beers on the shelf, than I have no problem with buying at the bottle shop. With that said I would prefer to buy directly from the source and support local craft brewers!

I am never going to get upset over a beer that I am never going to buy cause it's too expensive.

So I don't really hate the places, I just don't shop there. Seems to work out...

    The market works itself out.

The one local to me is a bit overpriced, but I can usually find some stuff that sells out at my hour away shop the day it arrives. Still plenty of ruin ten and just picked up some even more Jesus. They don't have limits either on bottles of special releases

    Hate's a strong word...
If the selection is Outstanding and the staff is helpfull and friendly, then I'm okay paying a little more.
