I try really hard to only give advice when I have something positive + helpful to say, but there are times that I feel some people need to have some sense slapped into them.

My question is: how do most of you who try to offer good, honest advice decide whether or not to be "gentle" with the person or not so "gentle?"

This is in response to the growing number of people I see asking "how much did your beer cost?"
Who cares? Either you have beer X and you want beer Y or you don't.

Just remind them that BA is a community. All communities have a culture of sorts. Our culture here is one of generosity, respect, etc.

    Also, I don't give advice.

With that advice you should give advice more often

Sorry, I only give advice on giving advice. Very high level stuff.

I read their tone. If you can tell the guy has a bad attitude, he's getting a shitty response from me, but if the guy's cool and just making a genuine mistake, I put on the kid gloves. Either way, I'm trying to be helpful. I just have more fun with the former.

I assume you are talking about how to respond to someone in a conversation about a trade. To be honest, I've all but given up on it. I used to always try to assist and explain when somebody said something stupid, and most people were quite receptive. But in the last few months I've found the opposite - you still get the occasional person that genuinely wants to learn how to do things right, but the majority just don't want the help. They get angry/rude/upset/argumentative. I don't really feel like explaining why Ebay value is irrelevant to trade value for the umpteen-millionth time if the person doesn't want to hear it.

I'm at the point now where bullshit offers, Ebay price dropping, and other nonsense just don't get responses. There are still tons of great traders out there, so I have little desire to waste time with the new style of trader.

I try, not always successfully, to ignore people with attitude issues. I prefer not to have my day ruined by thinking about all the sarcastic comments I could have returned to them.

In regards to your main question about cost, I'm not getting involved unless I'm trading the beer. The OP can deal with people who don't know what they're doing if he/she wants. Most likely, though, the OP is going to trade with someone who isn't asking mundane questions.

I'm really glad I am not the only one who recognizes this. Through my 10 completed trades thus far I've had 9 great experiences and 1 neutral experience. No bad ones and the majority of the guys I've traded with have been awesome

Of all the idiotic things that get posted in replies to ISO:FT threads, this is what chaps your ass? Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think it's a big deal to ask someone what their beer cost, whether it's in a thread or (preferably, I suppose) via BM. Some people like to go $4$ with most things. It's not a big deal.

Nah this was just the thing that I have the hardest time deciding whether or not to give a nice response or an appropriately not nice one. The things that are more idiotic than this I know deserve a negative response and the ones less idiotic deserve a kind response. This is the grey area for me

Edit: Also I support going $4$ but the thing I'm talking about is someone thinking "well I have the beer they want and they have the beer I want but I paid $5 more for mine so maybe I can get something else out of them as well"

    Here's how BA works:

    - You post something stupid
    - People call you out on it, make you feel like shit
    - You don't post stupid things any more
    - You call others out on their stupidity

I only wish more people would ask me what my beer cost during trading.
