I have never understood the word resin. What is this implying in a beer? I see BA's use this word when rating beer. Any responses are appreciated.

I tend to equate it to Pine Sap

Yup- like if you snapped a small evergreen branch, and the smell it gives off.

Find a pine tree. Look for the sap. Lick the sap. That's resin.

So in other words resin = piney?

I could be completely off, but I view resin as a hybrid taste/feel. I think the explanations above sort of fit, but the sap part of them I think is key, so not just piney. Piney and lingering, perhaps??

The black sticky stuff left in your bong after 3 months use, or so I'm told.

Grab yourself a Hardywood 'great return', Its a really resiny beer i've had recently. I would not particularly put piney specifically in that category, piney doesn't always mean resin, but resin pretty much comes with piney. There are piney flavors that don't have a resin mode.

Great Divide Titan is one of the best examples I can think of. Torpedo has some very resinous qualities, as does the eponymous offering from @Sixpoint.

Resin goes beyond pine to me in the sense that it includes a lingering mouthfeel with it, a sort of sap-like film that can range from persistent and thick to just a couple seconds at the end. Pine, to me, is exactly what @TongoRad described.

Ha ha. That's what I've always associated it with. I see the resiny description used particularly with heavily hopped IPAs. To me, hops smell a lot like weed. They are somewhat related in that the cannabis plant and the humulus plant(hops) are both part of the cannabaceae family. (Yes I looked this up)

I will need to try Resin (the beer of course) when I'm back in Wisconsin! I didn't even think about this beer when I started this thread. I never tried it.

Pretty much, but it's a bit deeper than if you just walked by a pine tree, for example.

I hope I never taste a beer that tastes remotely similar to that.

Resin the DIPA is what you're looking for, and no, nothing like nasty dirty bong residue. That'd be a poor tasting rachbier if anything.

For me resin can be a sticky, lingering pine flavor but it can also be a sticky, lingering weed flavor, which I sometimes describe as dank....

If you want resin, chew some pine sap. You will have resin for a week. Nasty stuff to get out of your mouth. I really don't recommend it. Drink the beer instead.

As everyone has said, pine sap. Not only the flavor for me, but the slick, oily feel too. What I imagine drinking WD-40 would do to my tongue
