    I was just wondering what everyone's favorite traditional pilsener beer was, I personally love Pilsner Urquell but I'm looking to try some new, non-american, preferably czech or german pilseners that people really love, thoughts?

    @rather either spelling is acceptable.

    I like Bavik a lot. Mostly in cans, so it doesn't get the same light-struck qualities that hurt other European pilsners.

    cans are a must, haven't gotten PU in cans yet but thankfully they have brown bottles now.

    ps thanks for the info, are they pronounced the same?

    Cans are certainly not a must. There are a number of great traditional craft pilsners brewed in North America. I've traveled in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic numerous times and enjoyed their wonderful pilsners fresh and local. Most aren't exported. The restricted samples we do have access to are not necessarily the best they offer. Pilsner Urquell is not nearly the best available in the Czech Republic, but is well known because of its ubiquitous availability here. Freshness is a real problem for the limited choices we get from Europe. You would generally be better off seeking the great craft versions available here. Many can be enjoyed fresh on draught.
    This is only available at the brewpub in Montreal, but its the finest pilsner I've had over here. There are many others that come close and have good distribution.

    Pilsner Urqell is pretty solid, and it's now in brown bottles!

    There's a ton of good pilsners around the East Coast, ranging from the heavily hopped Czech styles ton readier German styles. As far as widely-distributed American pilsners go, I llike Sweetwater Road Trip personally - tons of Saaz flavor although maybe not for everyone. Creature Comforts makes the best American-made Pilsner I've had but it's only available on draft/growler fills. Highland Lost Cove pale ale is virtually identical to a pilsner with a great biscuity malt flavor and spicy hops - never would guess it was a pale ale without the label.

    I really enjoy this style when done well. Schonramer is my favorite of those available in the US.

    Well, there's Jever, that's quite enjoyable. (See still active thread on it for an interesting discussion and more information.)

    Pilsner Urquell and Jever

    I can get each at around 40 days old. Both have incredible character when fresh.

    I have very limited experience with this style, but Simmit Pilsener is very good. Better than most of the other Pilseners I have had (BMC, mostly).

    My two favourite Traditional European Pilsners would have to be Pilsner Urquell (Czech Republic) and Stiegl Pils (Austria). Both are widely available and excellent examples of the style.

    I like Fraconian pilsners like Keesmann, Faessla, and Mahr's. They have a hefty hop profile like the northern examples (Jever and such) but with a malt body usually only found in Bavarian helles. Mahr's is the only one that makes it over here, although the one from Kaiserdom might, too.
    Jever and Rothaus Tannenzaepfle make it to some parts of the US. They're both fantastic. If you're looking for something easy to find, there's nothing wrong with Bitburger (those cans are cheap) and Stiegl is quite tasty.

    L'Amère á Boire is the shit! Everything is well-balanced, well-made, uobtrusive, drinkable, crisp and clean. What more could you ask for? Definitely the best non-European lager selection that I have found in North America (not that I have looked super extensively or anything:stuck_out_tongue:).
