I'm curious what the breakdown is here. How many of you save special/rare beers for special occasions as opposed to just drinking it whenever you feel like it? Cheers!

I like to save special beers for special occasions. Sadly, I've got to the point where I don't think I'll ever have enough special occasions to drink all of my special beers.

I save special beers to turn a lousy day into a special one.

Sometimes I just feeling like drinking from the cellar. My cellar beers are usually my special beers and my special beers outnumber my special occasions. So, I enjoy them when I feel like it. Besides, if "special occasions" are numerous, then how "special" can they be?

I save shelf beers for special occasions, special ones, but shelf beers nonetheless. I'm not sure whether to vote #1 or #3 in that case- but I figured #1 was closer in intent so went with that.

I will drink special beers on special occasions but the special stuff is not exclusive to special occasions. Sometimes you just in the mood on a random Friday to drink something real nice.

I always intend to save them for a special occasion, but sadly don't have many to look forward to. If my wife drank, our anniversary/her birthday/etc. would be grounds for cracking a special beer. But, being in the beer game by myself, I usually end up enjoying them after a nice relaxing weekend, or after an exceptionally shitty day at work.

At the moment, I only have 2 really special ones that I'm holding on to, maybe for my birthday. Not sure if they'll last until then, though.

I cracked open a 1.5 year old Westvleteren 12 tonight….the special occasion was because I felt like it. :grinning:

Typically I just save them to have with my 2 buddies I share this account with unless it's a beer that will get better with age, then we'll age it and enjoy it at some sort of event. Occasionally I'll save a really special beer knowing a special occasion is coming, just last Friday those same buds and I shared a Crooked Stave Passionfruit Petite Sour, Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett Aged in Leopold Bros Whiskey Barrels, a Trillium Double Pot & Kettle, a Firestone Walker Helldorado, and finally a Bourbon County Vanilla Rye for my 30th birthday. The Vanilla Rye was the beer I was saving for this milestone. It was definitely one of the more epic tasting nights we've had.

I save beers to take to bottle shares, but that's about it.

On the rare occasion that I buy anything with ABV over 7% or so in a container bigger than 16 ounces or so, it's most likely going to be saved for an occasion when I have someone to split it with. I also bought individual bottles of a bunch of harder-to-find beers (as in, I've never seen them in the grocery store before; not "whales" or whatever, just things I needed to go a little out of my way to get) as a birthday present to myself a while back.

Other than that, haven't really done a lot of "special occasion" beer-ing.

I recently sold a '11 Dark Lord and 4-packs of '14 BCBCS & '15 KBS just because I was tired of waiting for a special occasion.

I have an entire fridge of special occasion beers. I tend to psych myself out and not drink them on the occasion I've saved them for.

Opening a special bottle makes it a special day, and thus it is always appropriate.

^I wish I could actually embody this mentality, but truth is I sit on them in hopes of finding a special day to open them, but then feel stupid/anxious about waiting, and end up opening them for no good reason at all. Which should be the point, but my self-created anxiety beforehand should not be part of the process. :flushed:

I used to save special beers for special occasions but not anymore. Because you just never end up drinking them. I don't care if I get a 1 of 1 cantillon/hill farmstead collab aged in pappy barrels and blended with dirty horse, I am drinking it tomorrow night.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised by the results so far. I am squarely in the "drink what you want when you want" camp and figured it would get at least half of the votes. I guess I've always been a "seize the day" kind of guy, but as I've gotten older I've gained an even better appreciation for the fact that tomorrow is never guaranteed. I used to save a handful of beers for special occasions, but these days no beer in my cellar is off limits.
