Do any BAs even care about Rogue anymore? I wrote them off years ago.

For me it would be Hair of the Dog here in Portland.people rage about their beers as a matter of fact they have many in the top lists but I've hated every single one I've tried.
Also Russian river they take advantage of their rep and over price the shit out of their sours. Their beers are above average but not 14 dollars for a 12oz good.

Don't get the Wicked Weed negativity.

I bet most of the naysayers have not had the IPAs/DIPAs as they are not bottled--that problem to be rectified in a couple weeks.

Most people's experience are the sours. Seems like a lot of folk really really like them. Sorry you don't.

No. They're rightfully lauded. I just think Opal is boring (it's not rated that highly either).

Opinions of course, but Adam, Fred, and their from the Wood variants are among the best old ales around. Maybe you just don't like that style.

RR's sours are incredibly time-consuming and expensive to make. Sourcing wine barrels, blending, preventing contamination of their non-sours, buying fruit, time spent in barrels all cost a ton. Sours are always expensive, for good reason, and RR's are priced relatively fairly.

Have you had Sour Opal? I think that is a great "american gueuze style".

You might be right about the Hair of the Dog, old ale is not one of the styles I normally drink.

I do get that some sours are hard to make and take more time but I know of other good breweries (crooked stave, de garde, trinity) that make quality stuff for half of that price.

Unofficial tally: 75% of all breweries are overrated.

I wonder what percent are underrated or accurately rated.

Rogue isn't overrated. They produce solid gateway beers that are easy to find for people to get into craft beer. There's a difference between their beer not being in an elite class, and the brewery being overrated. I don't think anybody is rating rogue high enough for them to be overrated.

Crooked Stave sells most of their distributed beers (Surette, Vielle etc.) for like $9-$11 per 375ml (pretty on par with $12/375 with fruit additions) and 90% of DeGarde bottlings, while delicious, are not nearly as time consuming or expensive to make as the russian river sours, and thus are priced accordingly cheap (not to mention the lack of state sales tax in Oregon). Their pricing is pretty much in line with upper level/well known AWA brewers like Allagash, Prairie etc. and their quality is every bit as good if not better than most in that category.

Yeah. I really think that all of the sour barrel program but Feral Vinifera have been pretty one-note. More for you, though!

Their non-sour barrel program is all but unmatched though.

Jolly Pumpkin Ales. I know they make "good" beer, but I just can't stand them. Some of my least favorite beers come from there.

De Garde is a definite anomaly in their pricing, and I strongly respect them for that. A lot are Berliners or Gose however, which are cheaper styles (except fruit cost) with a much faster turnaround, and EVERYTHING they do is sour, so there's no infection prevention cost. Also, other than Broken Truck and Anniversary, I don't think any of them are as good as RR stuff, but from a value perspective, they're hard to beat.

I'm jealous of Crooked Stave for less than RR's pricing. They're fantastic, but similarly priced or higher in my area.

I'll take a peek at Trinity, thanks!

    Cheers.

Three Floyds makes some fantastic beers so I don't see how they could be overrated unless you are also thinking of zd. I recently had Permanent Funeral, Arctic Panzer Wolf, and Apocalypse Cow and these were all great.
Surly?? They are probably the most underrated brewery around. They have a stellar line up including Furious, Darkness,Coffee Bender, and Todd the Axe Man. If they were on the West Coast instead of Minnesota we would never stop hearing about how great they were. I have never had a beer from them that wasn't very good.

I've had many terrible beers from breweries that have great overall reputations. Shit happens and not every beer is gold. Disappointment happens when you elevate brewers to something more than what they are.

Their regular beers aren't even that expensive. After all, people still shell out $14 for six packs of Ballast Point, and they only make one beer that's worth that kind of premium. Rogue gets a lot of hate on this forum, and I feel like a lot of it's just bandwagon mentality; there isn't a single thing on the internet people won't throw a shit fit over.

If I had to drink nothing but beer from the breweries listed on this thread for the rest of my life I'd die the happiest man to ever live. Do you people even like beer?
