I'm in the special occasion frame of mind, but the occasion that demands a special beer and what constitutes a special beer are both ever-shifting.

That said, I don't hold too many special beers - but do find a need to justify them more than I should. Admitting the problem is step #1, no?

(Aside: typo was "admiring the problem..." Totally different, at least somewhat narcissistic, meaning with that mistake)

I voted #2. If a celebratory/festive moment occurs, will stop at the store for an atypical bottle purchase.

I'm also terrible at aging/saving beer. Once had an ideal bottle of Cantillon Mamouche - dated the day and year my daughter was born! Perfect opportunity to save for one of her milestones. Nope; made it less than two years and drank solo on a random weeknight.

I'm halfway between the first two options, closer to the first so that's what I selected. I do drink special beers on special occasions but I also like to save special beers for bottle shares that happen on not-so-special days. I'm not likely to down a whale to myself on a random weekday as it's just not practical for me.

I've started making less of the occasion and more of the drinking the beer because I have so much of it in cases and it's being produced so much faster now too. There's a bottle release every week down here for crazy variant sh t between the big and little breweries in this state, especially as the "winter" months come on, which makes a special occasion all the time if it's cold out. I dont live in Tampa but it's close enough, so we drink there every couple weeks, then, we bottle share every couple of weeks here in Orlando, so it puts enough lotion in the basket.

I have the belief that the special beers I get should be cherished and enjoyed. I guess you don't need a special occasion to do so. I like your thought process though and I feel like I should adopt this more often. I have more special beers than special occasions nowadays (pathetic in a way?) so I might as well "seize the day" and enjoy.

For years I always saved my top shelf stuff for occasions but now I tend to save some special brews for either a night with the boys - who also bring special brews - or an event/b day however, more often than not - I just open the fridge and say - F it. I'm popping a ____. I will say that I always make sure that the special brews are the first beer I have. I never pour one after I had something else or have more than 2. Taste buds fade after 2 or 3 so why waste them. I then switch to one of my stand bys.

I don't save my special beers so much for special occasions but more for special people.

my daughters are both into sours and saisons. one lives with us and the other with a friend in Philly. trying to get them both together is a challenge except on holidays and such but then there are other folks around and I feel bad about not sharing with them too. I currently have the Tired Hands Emptiness series waiting.

my beer drinking friend is into barleywines so I usually hold onto the good ones and we have an annual Father's Day tasting to knock 'em back.

my brother has been in Hong Kong for the last 7 years but visits the states once a year. I save the super special stuff to share with him. now that he's back in the states we'll have more chances plus he just bought a vacation place an hour or so from VT so i'll be able to introduce him to the wonders Hill Farmstead et al.

that's mostly what's in my cellar these days as I try to wind down my trading career.

I'd rather share, but since I live in the sticks with few friends that appreciate these beers any more, I usually don't. Plus at my age seeing the sun come up is a special occasion! I do save some for the holidays to be sure.

I drink what I want when I want. There's always something on the shelves that's "special" if I need to pick something up for an occasion. Then again, having no storage space for beer is a limiting factor. But even if I had the space, I don't think I'd be able to hold out

I generally drink what I want, when the mood strikes me. Occasionally I buy a bottle knowing I'm saving it for a special day or to have down the road. But just saving beers for the sake of planning out when to have them is not my thing.

i do a little bit or both: save for a special occasion and drink what i want. there are beers that i want to bring to shares, which i consider a special occasion, and beers that i will split with my wife (pregnant right now). other than that, its fair game.

    I chose other.

I save a portion of my special beers, but not necessarily for special occasions. I think that one of the primary intentions of beer should be sharing it with other people who love it. That being said, the "special occasion" is usually when I have someone that I want to share the beer with. Drinking a great brew is always more fun with company.
