Most beers fit into a rotation that considers them "in season" or best suited for a mood or time of the year. I can see the warming nature of a big stout or the nice refreshing tartness yet lightness of a Berliner, Lambic, or whatever sour. The nutty beers in the fall seem to pair with the season reasonably.

I love big IPAs. But I never find them particularly refreshing in the sense that a Berliner is refreshing. I dont want to sit out in the sun with a big sweet 11% IPA. I will do it though, but not because it fits the season, but because I will drink them any time regardless. When I have something like a Dreadnaught in mind or a Double Crooked Tree, I think of the sweetness and the malts and the booze.. not something I grab to quench my thirst.

This thread has no real direction, just curious what kind of "mood" an imperial IPA fits for you guys or if there is a time you prefer to have them more than others?

Sometimes I don't want to drink too many beers so 1Zenuff works out well!

I don't know, I didn't suffer all that much drinking HT at the beach. How many big sweet 11% Dipas are out there?

I just fininshed a Little Sumpin' Extra so, my answer is anytime. As long as I don't have a commitment to work or drive somewhere, that is.

It feels like the Midwest has so many 10+% ones!

Hop harvest season and cold weather make me drink many more IIPAs. The spring time as it starts getting warmer is another time I especially enjoy IIPAs.

I'm a big fan of double IPAs in fall and surprisingly enough I find them to be a great tailgating beer during football season. They're high in alcohol and accessible to a surprising number of people. I can personal drink several without the bitterness being overwhelming.

I don't think there's a 10% Dipa out there I could walk out there and just buy. The biggest might run 9-9.5 if I'm not mistaken, that might be Hopsickle.

Shucks! The title made me think there was free beer to be had. Oh well, I will now pop open a Resin to soften the blow.

C'mon guys.... You gotta drink them right after you buy them, no matter what mood you're in. If they sit for more than 8 minutes, the hops die and the beer is no longer fresh... and you are buying your DIPAs straight from the brewery, right?

Mood: had a big gulp of Pale Ale while sloshing in the tub, and now I want a half a glass of something strong, a little sweet, and deliriously hoppy.

Big imperial IPAs definitely have to fit a mood for me. I don't just come home and bust open a Pliny. Granted, they won't sit for too long though. I tend to drink a big IIPA or even a RIS on my Fridays, when I'm in a good mood. I often go outside and give the car a quick rinseless wash, then come in, kick back and bust open something "big" and relax.
