This website is not yelp. The user base here is knowledgeable on the topic and can filter where criticism is appropriate. Every mistake anyone makes at my job does and must get blasted out to the entire company. Also our mistakes can be looked up via the FDA website. It's part of business. Deal with it in an appropriate manner and there are no lingering negatives.

Not stay silent, but contact them first. Ya know, be a grownup and deal directly with the other party. Then, if you don't a satisfactory response, you can drag them through the on-line mud.

BTW, my bottle of Shapeshifter was awesome, great job Grimm!

They essentially contract brew, or did the last I read. And as a contract brewing gypsy brewery, I'd imagine not having full control at every level (if that's the case) may be to blame. They'd know better and I could be wrong, so cc'ing @Grimm_Artisanal_Ales

But anyway, to the main topic – they seemed quite responsive. Despite the trouble... at least it's being fixed.

Okay, that's fine. But let's look back at the OP here. Nothing particularly inflammatory or demonizing of the brewery. I don't see any mud-dragging going on.

And now Grimm's excellent response is a matter of public record. As is the knowledge that some bottles are going to have this issue.

I guess I see value in having all this information available for anyone to see. It's possible that some consumers may not want to hassle with the potential of finding a bottle of slurry and getting a replacement bottle. They should have the right to make that informed decision. As long as you aren't putting the brewery on blast, then I see no problem with sharing the information.

Really, I was just teasing. Shit happens, and most importantly, Grimm seems to be handling it and promptly.

Quality issues, consistency from one batch to the next, and the idea that the brewer or the company is very accessible to the consumer is unique to craft beer. I do not think that some folks are prepared for what they might find in the bottle. Sediment, no carbonation, infection, off flavors and gushers. It's very common to feel like something happened to you when you get a bad product. I have had similar experiences. When I first started trying beer these experiences were as foreign to me a sthe sight of a penguin at a tennis match. Now, not so much and I take it in stride. A good brewer does want to know that you got a bottle that looked like that.

I know for me personally nothing said in this thread has made me lose a thread of respect for Grimm as brewer or company. I've had other beers from them that have been good and the example posted by OP is CLEARLY an outlying issue and not the norm. He did reach out to the brewery before/at the same time as posting this and something tells me that if he were needlessly bashing the company that maybe, just maybe, a moderator would be able to clean things up before anyone's reputation was hurt. This community is for the advancement of beer knowledge as much as appreciation and weird occurrences like this certainly help to further people's knowledge of what can happen to a beer during packaging.

Hey folks. Thanks for alerting us to the thread.

    The story of this bottle:
Cherry Oak Shapeshifter was aged with a lot of tart cherry puree in brandy barrels. We racked from the barrels into the brite tank and picked up some cherry fruit solids and sediment along the way.

We have a mobile bottler who comes by the brewery to fill bottles, and we neglected to alert him to the possibility of this cherry gunk. Totally our fault. So as our friend was filling the last few bottles, they were essentially ALL sediment and he didn't notice it. We have seen 4 such bottles to date.

If anyone else finds one of these bottles, send us a picture and your address. We'll make it up to you.

Also, if anyone finds such a bottle will you please email/direct message to us the retailer where you found it? It would be great to be able to call the retailer and have him look at any other bottles from the same case.

    Mmm, chewy!

I will also add that in the 20+ bottles of Grimm beer I've had, I have not run into this issue.

Sorry for your ruined beer OP, but it isn't an accurate reflection of the quality beer Grimm is brewing!

It's called "Shapeshifter." Why should you be surprised when the beer comes out in an unexpected form?

@Grimm_Artisanal_Ales , as I mentioned back upthread, my bottle was delicious. I'm actually looking to get some more, how much Shapeshifter was bottled?

That slurry might have been good mixed with ice cream or plain yoghurt.

Update 9/7/2015 - Travelled overseas and just got back with a package patiently waiting. Joe Grimm sent two bombers (Cherry Oak Shapeshifter & Rainbow Dome) and included a Grimm glass. Its nice to see a company do things right.
