    EBay sellers profit in dollars.
"Trade value maximizers" profit in # of beers or value of beers.

The extent to which you see these types of profit as different probably determines whether or not you give a shit about which one, if any, is more morally righteous.

My point was that just because FedEx, UPS, and the USPS don't look through every parcel they ship (just like how ICE and the US ports authorities don't search every single shipping container that comes into the country), doesn't make it not illegal to ship beer and wine from private party to private party (or unlicensed company to private party).

People who trade (and who sold/bought beer through ebay) flaunted the law. Period. Full stop.

Granted, the likelihood of something bad happening to you shipping a bottle here or there, is extremely low... but that's not really the point.

Another important thing about eBay is there is zero risk. Buyer is fully protected. Don't need a "bad trader" list on eBay. If the seller screws you - bam - Paypal reversal. No loss.

With eBay not an option as a source and if the trading forum gets taken down, how will I ever get this trade done.....:slight_frown:

ISO: Dark Lord 07-11, BA Dark Lord, Rare, KH, CBS, Darkness, KtG, Hunhapu, Dark Note, Black Tuesday, Cantillon's entire line up, Abyss (non-infected), Westy 12. FT: Left Kidney. Can throw in a lobe of the liver as well if needed to sweeten the deal.
(Disclaimer: liver has wear and tear due to really good beer exposure).

    In person trade only...

I'm not sure if this point has been broached, but I'd suggest calling Ebay. (Emailing complaints does not appear to be an option.) Ebay took down a number of auctions but there's still a ton up, mostly new. I can't help but think Ebay is being intentionally lax in playing whack-a-mole with new auctions, but the rep I spoke with seemed to take my complaint seriously and is directing the matter up the food chain. The rep asked for specific names of auctioners listed auctions. If their call volume of complaints increases, I'd expect them to be a bit more vigilant in their patrolling.

Though we may be using the legality of selling beer on eBay to say it should not be done, I think what we are mostly saying is that it is for the good of the community in the same way that disallowing scalping tickets (though sometimes useful when allowed) is usually for the good of the community.

Sorry I got confused. I thought trying to prevent Ebay auctions was a good thing. What was I thinking?!

Long story short, some pretentious brewer (Vinnie at RR) threatens eBay that what they were doing is illegal so eBay gets scared and puts an end to it. Consumers now have less access to beer. I hope he and Shaun are happy, they should hold hands and write a poem about how the big bad eBay has been killed and now you can only get their beer from the brewery.

Now the real question is - where will be the next place where people can order the beers that would otherwise be prohibitively far from them?

It's funny that when Shaun from HF was asked about consumers now having less access, he suggested they fly out to Vermont to get it. I'm sure Vinnie thinks the same. If you want my beer, pay a thousand dollars to fly out, book hotels, and line up to compete for a bottle that you might not get!

Im just curious, if you go here:

    http://beerauctions.com/

...there are plenty of beers for sale, but they are all just links to ebay auctions. Sooooo, what I am curious about, how is ebay deciding what does and doesnt stick around? If the beer is truly truly very rare, thereby making it somewhat concievable that someone might actually want to collect the bottle (not the contents) does that help its case? Or are these auctions just there because they have sliped through the cracks and haven't been yanked yet?

I deserve to have access to any beer that I want and distribution, bottle limit or availability should not stand in my way and if they do the breweries should fix that. And by the way, lay off the entitlement talk it is my right as a beer drinker and an American damn it.

I think you're making a serious straw man here. Shaun Hill is not deliberately limiting who can get his beer at all. What he's saying is, the only way he KNOWS that the quality will be good is if his own brewery distributes the beer. Given the size of the brewery and the quality of beer they produce, they are not able to ship their beers out, and as such it is only available at the brewery. Furthermore, given how much care and effort Shaun puts into his beer, it's insane that someone lucky enough to live within driving distance of the brewery should profit by selling his brews at a 300%+ markup.

If you live too far from the brewery to get Hill Farmstead beer, then you just don't get to have Hill Farmstead beer unless you have a friend who happens by. I think of the best beers as art. You wouldn't complain if your favorite artist couldn't ship directly to you, and you wouldn't feel so entitled to it.

So you feel entitled it? Got it.

So - I guess Shaun will stop bottling and all growler fills right? As we know - eBay is THE ONLY way beer gets shipped!

If his beers are so freaking fragile they couldn't handle distribution - he's doing something wrong. I guess all the breweries who use a distributor have shitty beer? Stone distributes Pliny the Elder here in San Diego. No problems here. Guess my palate isn't elite like a HF drinker....
