Yick. I actually saw that one on a store shelf a while back when I was first starting to try all kinds of different beers and considered buying it -- kinda glad I didn't now, as I absolutely hate the taste of bologna (I didn't even like it when I was a kid... any other lunchmeat, sure, but keep the bologna far, far away!)

Not to get off topic, but also diaper? Have seen that one a few times and I can't quite wrap my head around that.

The esters and phenols that are created by brettanomyces can be hard to describe. I would guess that some of the funkier aromas have something in common with those smells and have been described as such by people who live on or near farms or whatever. I personally don't use those descriptors. I have smelled urinal cake and pencil shavings before though. Make of that what you will.

The descriptor I like to use is earthy. I think horse blanket and barnyard are closer, but earthy sounds so much better.

Really? There's not much positive spin you can put on that one.

For the Urban/Suburban BAs out there, a blanket is put between the horse and it's saddle. Over time, that blanket picks up the scent of the horses sweat, combined with the aroma from the leather in the saddle. It's quite a pleasant aroma. Perhaps find a stable near you and go on a beginners ride sometime. You'll be able to make the connection quickly.

    Fair enough. Now explain diaper.

I've never really smelt a horse blanket, so deliberately don't use the term. I have, however, smelt and been around barnyards and farms, and I can definitely see the link between the general aromas present. There is definitely something earthy and rustic about the smell; it's not unpleasant at all, and a world apart from manure.

Having 2 kids (one who's age is measured in weeks) I am quite familiar with daipers / nappies. That one, however, I can definitely say I haven't picked up in a beer, and really wouldn't want to...

I've spent plenty of time in rural Wisconsin. I've even worked on a dairy farm way back in the day. The only smell I readily associate with "barnyard" is cow crap. But obviously there are plenty of people that get something I don't so more power to them.

I've tasted that "iodine-like bandaid" taste, but never diaper. The first brewery that puts that in their tasting notes gets my unwavering respect.

Judge a homebrew competition- chances are you'll get that one as well as urinal cake. Not in medal winning beers, however .

Those are the last descriptors I'd expect to see from a brewery charging people money, though.

I wonder if the people who use diaper actually mean disposable diapers, like Pampers? Being made from chemicals, they could have some of the same plastic-y aspects as band-aids, and maybe that's where they're making the connection. As far as cloths diapers go, I have no idea how that would show up in a beer. I've never gotten cotton or laundry aspects.

No- the actual descriptor judges will use is 'baby diaper', and it definitely means that there are poopies in it .

This is probably the most concise answer you will get to your question OP. Very well described.

I've heard diaper used to describe Cantillon St. Lamvinus and Funk Factory The Fox and the Grapes. I definitely personally don't get that, but it must be some sort of interaction between the funk and the grapes that gives people that impression. Those are two of my favorite beers of all time.

    D'aww.

Thanks! Can't say I've ever been accused of being "concise" before. :stuck_out_tongue:
