I recently started to eliminate meat from my diet, and have been doing some reading on the distinctions between vegetarianism, and veganism, not only from a dietary standpoint, but from a moral one. The common thread I have noticed is that veganism as an ideal is impossible to achieve, simply because we could not survive without even indirectly using some form of animal byproduct.

Now, as it relates to beer, I have read that some vegans abstain from drinking beer because of its use of yeast as an ingredient. Are there vegans here who abide by this, or is your definition of vegan simply used as a dietary guideline and not an all-encompassing lifestyle? (Meaning: As long as the yeast is completely filtered out, I'm ok, or even if yeast was used in the process at any point, it's taboo.)

    Cheers!

P.S.: I am in not danger of becoming a full vegan, and will never give up beer.

Do you do crossfit too?

In all seriousness, what's the issue with yeast as related to veganism? It's bad enough giving up bacon, steaks, and cheese, but damn, beer? Reason enough to never give up beer even if it means rotting in hell in the next life.

Well yeast isn't an animal or byproduct so I don't understand not drinking beer cause of it. I haven't ate meat in ten years and there are some Craft companies I don't support cause of their support for factory farming and use in their beer. Which from an animal rights stand point certainly makes sense....but yeast?

I could see beers with lactose and/or honey presenting an issue, but I don't see why the yeast would be a problem.

I knew beer was off limits in a paleo diet but I am not sure about vegan diets. I know vegans who drink beer and wine. Here is a vegan site that lists beers with dairy and honey in them. So the fact that a list was made suggests that there is beer that is OK.

Yea there is plenty of vegan and non vegan beer...I'm more confused from the yeast point of view. Microorganism conscious beer drinkers ...:sunglasses:

Veganism is far from impossible to achieve, ask my wife.

Happiness without Meat, Cheese and (now) Beer? That may be harder.

Yeast is considered a fungus and is vegan friendly as far as I've heard. If someone told you it was an animal rather than a fungus, and that classification made a difference to you, maybe it's time to re-evaluate why. Vegans should look into any beer made with honey if they're concerned.
    Can you elaborate?

If I am not mistaken, Veganism is the practice of not eating any living organism or causing a living organism to pass for want of ingesting it. So leaf on a tree? Can't eat it. Leaf that fell to the ground - good to go.

In making that explanation, I am seriously not making light of Veganism, as people are free to do and believe whatever they wish - I LITERALLY couldn't care less what others practice. Eat meat, don't eat meat - your decision and not mine. And if it's a decision that makes you happier and more healthy than I'm happy for you. I personally don't have the will power to stay away from so damn many tasty animal products!

My wife is vegan. Yeast is not an issue.

However, the insinglass (swim bladder of a fish) used to filter a lot of beers is something she tries to avoid when possible.

I don't think yeast can feel any pain or suffering seeing as how they are a one celled organism. I think yeast is good to go for vegans.

Veganism is abstaining from the use of animal products. It has nothing to do with yeast.

Sure, there's a few examples but one more common ones is the use of Kopi Luwak which is no longer picked from the ground but farmed from civets. To even get it here 99% of the time you'll have to buy it from someone who bought it directly from a civet farm. Which makes our factory farms look like 5 star resorts.

Veganism, protein, and food that tastes good. You can have any two.

Other than Jains I haven't heard of anybody who has moral issues with killing microorganisms. If that bothers you then you should probably have a problem with killing vegetables too.

And really, if you're yeast, isn't beer the the best possible outcome for you?

Veganism is essentially impossible because in agriculture (ESPECIALLY of the organic type), animals die, whether it be from tilling, habitat loss, pesticides, or crop protection. The only way to eliminate it almost entirely is to grow all your own vegetables indoors.
