The more and more I go to new breweries, the less and less I feel the need to order fights. I used to want to sample everything. Now I feel like to truly enjoy a beer I need more than a few ounces. I really like to taste the beer from beginning to end and I feel like with flights you miss that important(to me) aspect. Also all the different flavors on your pallet when your switching between so many different beers so quickly cant be helping anything.

What do you guys think? Flights? Or no flights?

No flights here. Been around the block enough times to know if I'm not interested in a certain style

Absolutely. If it's an option, I'm pretty much guaranteed to at least start off with a flight. I love variety.

I'm 100% with you. I never order flights. Just give me the pint. So many beers change as they warm, get tiresome after half of the pint, or get better after half the pint! I need the full thing. I also agree with not going back to back with 4-6 beers in a row. Flavors muddle. Plus you don't get the best nose or anything out of a little shooter glass.

If I have ample time, and I'm in good company, I'll usually choose a flight. Your concerns are duly not, and I don't necessarily disagree with any of them, though. Ideally, I enjoy the flight, and then choose one or two more based on my preferences.

The situation dictates which. Is it a familiar brewery, not interesting/interesting choices, price, etc. If I'm gonna be there a while and have some pints, maybe a little taster first is not a bad idea.

If it's my first visit to a brewery and I'm unfamiliar with their offerings, then yes I'll order a flight.

For me it completely depends on the beers available. If there are enough styles that look interesting, I'm all for a flight. Otherwise I'll just stick with the 12oz-16oz pour.

Never have, never will. I'd rather ride the wave wherever it takes me.

I rarely order flights if I'm interesting in trying a new beer. I'd almost rather get burned by buying a pint and trying it for more than 2 sips than "liking" the flight portion and coming back to it and being really disappointed because I thought that I really liked it, or vice versa of not liking the flight but coming back to it later and really liking it.
    If that makes sense.

Every flight I've had was at a special event, like a sour fest or barrel aged fest. Just a regular every day at a brewery or tap room I don't need one. I know what styles I prefer most, can just ask for a few samples and get a full pour and am happy.

It will not be the popular opinion here amongst the serious drinkers, but I really like flights. These days, I do not go to bars to socialize, I go to drink beer, and that makes a big difference. One advantage of drinking out vs having a bottle at home, is the greater control over your portion. Despite this, I'm a believer in the notion that you'll have greater understanding of the beer the more of it you drink (and at the exclusion of other beers).

Sounds like this one is divided pretty equally so far...

you betcha, even if there are styles I don't care for I am always interested in what brewers are coming up with.

This is my thought as well with the caveat that the flight is reasonably priced. I've seen places charging something like $1/oz for pours of a flight, which is beyond ridiculous.

If there's multiple beers that are within styles I like or believe I will like then I absolutely get a flight. Unless it's something very highly rated or I know I love I'm not committing to a full pour

It there enough styles that I like that it would justify getting a flight sure.

Even if there are styles i know i'm not crazy about, i'll still get one for two reasons: It's never too late for your palate to change and you start to like a style, and if i know i'm not going to be able to get those beers anywhere else.

I can get what I want out of a pint. If its good, I'll buy a growler. If not I'll buy another pint of something else.

Not to bring something else up, but I enjoy flights when they have multiple beers i actually want to try but don't want to get hammered. But does anyone else HATE it when they have 2-3 pre-made flights and each flight only has 1 or 2 of the beers you wanted? I just refuse to do that and just get their signature beer.
