Gotta go with the flight. I look at it as an appetizer for the main course. Lets me sample styles, and may influence what I order a pint of.

I have never bought a flight.

My instinct is typically fight, not flight.

If they're available, I almost always start with a flight and then grab a pint of my favorite outta the bunch.

If I'm at a bar/brewery that doesn't offer flights, and I'm unfamiliar with a beer or two, I'll ask for a taste. Most bartenders are happy to oblige, and that way I never get burned by a pint that doesn't suit my fancy.

Pre-selected flights really rub me the wrong way. Only exception might be the brewer himself felt that clashing of certain styles would be a detriment to the overall enjoyment of a particular beer.

Yes because so many are not worth drinking an entire pint, I'd prefer to weed them out as cheaply as possible.

Yep, I definitely do flights if I'm planning to visit numerous places same day. I'll go with a flight if there are more than 3-4 beers I want to try on the draft list. Hit the flight and then move on...

Although I agree with those that say "yes" to being a "flight guy," I've gone to certain places, such as Russian River, where the flight is 19+ beers and you get to the end of tasting the beers with a slight palate fatigue (at least for me). Now I just order a few full sized beers of my choice instead of the flight. Although it gives it a certain sense of fun to get different beers. In summary, I will not stop ordering flights so long as new beer keeps coming out but will enjoy my favorites in their full amount. Why not get both the flight and order the full size of your favorite? Isn't that what it's about? :grinning:

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, I don't order flights, but I do love half-pours. I feel like an asshole ordering flights, I'm pretty sure bartenders hate it. Plus I get ADD with all the beer in front of me at once.

On my first trip to a brewery I'll at least get one or two flights before I get a pint. On repeat visits I will just get a full pour if there's not 4 new beers I haven't tried.

If a flight seems like a good value (cost per ounce) then I'll order one.

As a courtesy to the bartender, I will not order a flight if a place is really busy.

I don't order flights. I prefer to enjoy a full pour of something and let it open up. Plus, churning out flight after flight is a pain in the ass for the tasting room workers.

Half pint guy here. For me they are the perfect amount & best way to get through more than enough of what a new brewery offers over the course of a few hours.

Just don't call me Half Pint...

I am definitely in this camp as well and I wish more places offered a half-pint pour. I get rather frustrated when my only options are a 2-3oz taster or a full pint and nothing in between. I like to drink several beers in one session but if I did that with full pints I'd be past my limit or have to miss out on a beer or two. Half pints are perfect, enough to really get the flavor across the temperature spectrum but not to much to wash you out.

Flights are great. Some beers taste better in a smaller amount. Can be to much or overwhelming to get a pint of it. Especially the real dark and heavy beers. I like to taste test 4 or 5 beers then pick which one I like the best for a large glass.

depends on the line up of what I get versus price. Some place used to give you a free flight! I wonder if any still do?
If I get to pick, or if its a everything they have thing then heck yes AND ITS free or cheap.

20 samples of 2 to 4oz of beer is a joke to me and I can down that in 30 minutes of less. Most of the time though, at least around here its 40% of the menu is hop bombs...some weak crap lager, and maybe something dark. I go with the porter if they make 1 if that is decent then we try something else.

    like anything it depends...
