A lot of people that I know seem to think that I'm an alcoholic, even though I normally only drink 2 or 3 beers on Saturday or Sunday. Obviously, I do drink a little more on special occasions, like family members visiting from another state or country, and when I go out with friends to a bar (going out with friends to a bar isn't really special), but that only happens once in a long while. I do have a fridge in the garage with a bunch of different types of beer, and I do know more about beer than your average drinker, but does that really make me an alcoholic?
I have never felt desperate to drink alcohol at all. It just kinda bothers me when family members, specially my parents look at me like I'm some alcoholic that can't live with out beer. What do you guys think?

It doesn't sound like it, but I can only go off of how you see it. Can you go a month without drinking or constantly thinking about drinking? Do you HAVE to drink to have fun?

Generally beer people drink a lot. I can't say it's healthy, but only you know if its impacting your life negatively. I don't know you, but it sounds you have things under control.

Anyway I and a lot of other beer advocates out drink you by far from your description. I just don't make any qualms about it. I know it's not the healthiest lifestyle, but it's my passion and I am in love with the flavor.

Really? Two or three beers on weekend days and people you know think you're an alcoholic? I find that hard to believe. You don't even qualify as a binge drinker!

This hits home for me. I drink maybe 3-4 beers a week and my mother has treated me like I'm a budding alcoholic. Last time I checked "moderate" drinking for an adult man was 2 beers per day!

I never considered a beer after dinner a few times a week alcoholic behavior.

PS - One of the main reasons is that I come from a Christian household (I myself am Christian) and that plays a big part of it. The bible says NOTHING about staying away from alcohol, it does, however, warn of overindulgence.

Unless there's more to this situation, I wouldn't be concerned about being an alcoholic...

Anything more than "social drinking" seems to correlate to being an alcoholic now a days

It's not and "end all" test, just a thought/suggestion for someone who questions their own drinking.

Probably, Since I started drinking, I have gone without alcohol for about 3 weeks, twice (was on tight budget). No, I don't, but it does relax me.

The person who knows best about how much you can drink is yourself. Especially if it doesn't impact anyone else in any negative way. I happen to drink quite a few beers throughout my week, but I've also gone six months plus without a single beer while dropping some weight.

People tend to get that idea about us beer nerds, since it is all we ever talk about. However, I rarely drink more than one (if any) per night during the week. Unless I am out with friends at a beer bar.

People also tend to think this when they see me at the liquor/beer store all the time. Usually I am just scouting it out for recent arrivals before the store has a chance to seriously mishandle it.

Do you go to meetings? LOL
Unless your drinking is affecting your life or that of your loved one's, who cares about two drinks a night on the weekend?

I don't think it's a problem until you can't control it like you can't stop after 3 beers or you have to be drinking to enjoy yourself or you are to hung over to take care of business then yes I would be concerned. And yes it does say on the bible that you should not drink only old people and people who are sick should indulge.

I have no way of knowing your specific situation, but if you are really a grown man who gets called an alcoholic for drinking a couple beers on the weekend, you have every right to tell them to go fuck themselves. I will say this is probably not the best place to get advice on something like this. I know I'm above the legal limit right now, and I'm willing to bet a good chunk of the population here is right along with me. Hope you figure everything out. Cheers!

I think you barely qualify as a drinker at all if that's all ya drink!

Lots of people (including myself) drink tons more than you (on a daily basis, we're talking) and still live perfectly functional lives. If you ever checked out the volumes consumed by certain individuals (including myself) over one week in the WBAYDN threads, you'd quickly feel like you do NOT over-indulge.

More importantly, however, I don't think you should care what others think of your drinkin'. I don't give a damn about what anyone thinks of my beer consumption, that's for sure. As long as I'm not drinking myself sick and being hungover and unable to do things I want to do everyday, I'll drink as much as I please. Pretty simple rule.

The healthcare community uses a fairly simple questionnaire to help decide. Generally, answering "yes" to two or more of these questions is considered alcoholism, or at least concerning alcohol use.

I think the problem for me might be that a lot of my uncles (mom's side) drink a lot. They usually drink until they can't stand up anymore. I guess the best thing I could do is just ignore them, or just talk some of them about it.
