I hope I don't get banned from NBS for this but my new beer is an AAL. Narragansett Lager poured into a pint glass from a 1975 limited edition can. This beer get some talk on the board most of it positive. It's a very nice refreshing brew on a beautiful summer afternoon. When I started drinking beers AALs were about all you could get. I enjoyed drinking them but decided early on that they were all just about the same. With that in mind lets pop open a can of Budweiser. Side by side the heads are the same but the Bud is paler. The aromas are a bit different but I can't pinpoint why. The biggest difference is in the finish Budweiser is sweet, Narragansett is dry. Both are good examples of an AAL. I'll take day over sweet any day, Narragansett wins I guess.
The 1975 Limited Edition Car is the can that was drunk by Robert Shaw in Jaws.

Happy NBS people. It's just about the perfect summer day here in New Jersey. No work tomorrow. I'm relaxing on the patio drinking beer and listening to music, my son is playing with his Millennium Falcon and Star Wars action figures. My wife and daughter...are doing something. Anyway, one of my new local breweries, Demented Brewing, just released a fall harvest beer called Moon Reaper. It's a wet hopped brown ale. Well, it looks, uh, brown. Smells of sweet malts, a bit of caramel. Tastes also somewhat sweet, but the hops come through nicely, although they don't take center stage. This is a nice, kind of unique beer. Never had a wet hopped brown ale, and brown ales themselves seem to be getting scarce these days. Moon Reaper is well balanced and subtle for those looking for such beers. I'm going to revisit this one again in the near future. I might be back later with a review of Knee Deep Lupulin River. Cheers!

The packaging here earns points. Classy. I don't mind paying for the box.

Poured pale but pulled off a soft dark orange glow...

This had lotsa of juicy wet fruits, akin to those from orchards, both citrus and tropical. Lush and plush, honeyed, with vanilla and oak, vapors of whiskey hung over. Full on the tongue, with a bit of tingle. Smooth and fruity, a little whiskey wood...

    Cheers, NBS...

This one is Choptank'd from Brewer's Art in Baltimore, MD. REVIEW TIME!

Finally, I get to sample this beer beyond a damn cask (saisons shouldn't be served in casks, guys...) The nose isn't particularly special, but it does bring nice tones of lemon and wheat. While I pick up some gentle black pepper, I'm missing some of that rustic nature that would have brought this up beyond "slightly different witbier". Tasting this...nope, not very rustic. I get plenty of wheat and lemon, but I get that out of many witbiers. The whole thing tastes muddled and messy, and what's worse, I get no grapefruit taste. While it's well carbonated, the feel seems astringent to the point of being bothersome (hi, rye!) On the plus side, it's not that watery to me - but it is flabby and overly wet. Not a huge fan of this beer, as it's too muddled and weak. Honestly, as much as I bitched about how a saison shouldn't be thrown in a cask, I really think the cask version was better than the cans.

Anyone know the name for the beer glass in this picture? I really like it, and it gets overlooked in most glassware discussions. I think I saw it called a European Pint Glass, but not sure. Thanks!

Cool deal. I like your phrase "unusual bitterness sensation" in the taste notes. Unusual bitterness indeed!

Fremont Dark Star Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout

As you can see, this one is not shy when it comes to showing off an incredible head. Thick and luxurious.

Nose has bourbon, vanilla and chocolate as it's most notable calling cards to start with a little molasses tying it together.

Initial taste is reminiscent of egg nog of all things! Actually, that's high praise from me since I do love egg nog, but what I think I am getting is the interplay between the bourbon and spices. Once I convince myself that it isn't egg nog, I start to notice mostly whiskey. Finish is a touch hot but whether it's the heat from the alcohol or the subtle spice, I can't discern but the extreme dryness on the finish is voting for alcohol.

It feels so incredibly creamy. Medium bodied and silky with just a bit of tingling on the finish.

Very nice beer to say the least. Not on overwhelming bourbon bomb like a KBS or BCBS, but far more depth for its age that doesn't overwhelm the subtle characteristics.

Hey, that's a good call - I love the T IPA - got another bottle of Thunderstruck on hand, but right now I'm tasting Helldorado so I'm gonna have to come back to that thought...
Yeah, me and the wife'll watch it live - heck - she's the one that's gotta go to work tomorrow :stuck_out_tongue: lol

Good afternoon, New Beer Sunday gals and guys!

I've been down in Florida for the past week, visiting my kids, so I haven't been on the forums much lately. That doesn't mean I haven't been trying new beer, though; from Sunday to Sunday, I've logged 12 new beers.

Today, I've had two new beers thus far, both enjoyed on tap with lunch at the Malted Barley. First up: Otter Creek's Couch Surfer oatmeal stout on nitro.

I liked this quite a bit. It was certainly thicker than a typical 5.4% stout, due certainly in part to the nitro. That may also have been responsible for the somewhat muted qualities in the aroma and on the palate. There's a bit of roastiness, but it doesn't really start to come out stronger until the beer is around room temperature.

    3.75 / N/A (0%)

Next up is Double Black IPA by Revival.

It's a beautiful beer, to be sure, and the nose promises juicy and dank hop notes. There isn't much in the aroma betraying the roasty malts, but I like my black IPAs to be quite hop forward, anyway (if the malt is too prominent, then they're mislabeled stouts, IMO).

Flavor follows, and disappoints, sadly. The hops are kind of mixed up, although I get some pineapple and grass notes. A bit of roasted barley and caramel malt round out the flavor profile, but it's altogether kind of muddled and weak. Lovely, lively mouthfeel.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26765/77451/?ba=Roguer
    3.75 / -5.8%

I think it's funny the way the overall scores evened out on these brews. They each had their strengths and weaknesses. Despite the "tie," however, I'd grab Couch Surfer again any day, while I'd probably not grab Double Black IPA again any time soon.

    Cheers, NBSers!

Good afternoon NBS, hope everyone is enjoying their new beers. Last day of my summer break and working on finishing my last growler from Tired Hands. First lager from them and it's a good one.

    4.21/5rDev n/a
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

32 oz growler filled on 8/21 poured into a pint glass

A- A hazy golden straw color with a three finger white head.

S- Floral, some earthy spice, pilsner malts, citrus, some grapefruit.

T- Citrus, earthy spice in the finish, bready malts, some peppercorns, nicely balanced.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- The first lager I have tried from Tired Hands and it is good one. Citra hops are noticeable but aren't the focus of the beer. Worth seeking out, always love to Tired Hands try different styles. (500 characters)
