Hi all --- I’m moving to Minneapolis at the end of September. Looking forward to joining the Midwest forum!

I have been to a handful of local breweries and am familiar with the likes of Surly, Indeed, Fulton, etc., but I’m wondering if there is a Twin Cities brewery that focuses on brewing hoppy beers. From my (admittedly limited) experience it seems that a lot of the Minnesota breweries are putting out great beer, but try to keep a well-rounded variety of styles on tap. Is there a local brewery that is consistently brewing new IPAs and/or has multiple IPAs on tap at all times?

For example, in Brooklyn when I go to the Other Half Brewing taproom it is common that they will have 8-10 different IPAs on tap. Some are mainstays and others are one off beers that they may never brew again. This type of hop dominant tap list seems to be a common thread among the most popular Northeast breweries.

If this doesn’t exist in the area, does anyone have thoughts about why not? Appealing to a broader audience? IPAs aren’t as dominantly popular in the area? Hops contracts? Is there a market for a brewery like this in Minneapolis?

Just stay away from 612... if you go there in your early days you'll think our beer scene sucks.

As far as your question, I don't get out to a lot of breweries but my initial thought is our scene is still so new and fresh that a lot of places can afford to have 8-10 taps up, let along 8-10 IPAs.

Suryl will be your mainstay in the regard.

Welcome to MN - I just moved here from Massachusetts not too long ago. From a hop perspective, Surly is probably be the best bet and will usually have 5 or so at any given time (Furious, Overrated, Seasonal, a few one-offs). One other brewery that comes to mind is Sisyphus. They usually have two or three hoppy beers on at a given time. Not a lot, but from my admittedly limited experience, they are high quality and rotate fairly frequently.

    You'll need a bike.

Start at Surly for a Todd, or Abrasive or whatever else is on at that particular time in the year (Hopshifter was also very good). Then head to Town Hall for a Masala Mama or Mango Mama, maybe Citra Mania will be on too? Then head over to Dangerous Man for a House IPA or DIPA and whatever they have on from their Single Hop series. Then over to Indeed for Let it Ride or Let it Roll, and perhaps a Double Day Tripper or two. Finish it off at Fair State with their IPA and Pahlay'Ahlay if you're lucky.

That should quench your thirst for hops. It also might give you one of those "I'm never drinking again" mornings, but hey - you asked for 8-10 hoppy beers

I do not think any brewery in MN will have 10 IPAs on-tap at once. Doubt it would ever happen around here. A hophead will have to settle for a brewery's IPA, DIPA, and maybe another alternative IPA. I think the scene here likes a lot more diversity.

Town Hall usually has 4-5 hoppy offerings on at once, and I still maintain they're the best brewery in the state.

Fair State is really spectacular, too, and they seem to be getting better.

Steel Toe has variations of what I assume is the same hoppy recipe (Size 5, Size 7, Size 11). They also have other hoppy stuff.

Bauhaus does a pretty hoppy pilsner (I know, not what you're looking for), and their IPL and IPA were both impressive to me.

Obviously Surly is a great option, and the new space is pretty cool.

I would steer clear of Dangerous Man for IPAs. Their beers are good, but the hoppy ones left me underwhelmed.

I also never got on the Indeed train.

Now is the time to be a Wolves fan my man! Wiggins, Towns, Lavine, Bazz, Dieng, & Rubio. We're coming!!

Sisyphus just may hit the spot for you. Off the top of my head they have their: West Coast IPA, The First Beer We Named (Citra IPA), Oatmeal pale ale 2 with infused grapefruit, Hoppy Amber, Double Rye (Double IPA with rye), Citra Session, Simcoe pale ale, Black IPA, among other hoppy and non hoppy options. They also just received their first shipment of Mosaic hops too. So they are working on a couple different beers with those in the mix. That's a fantastic flavor and aroma hop!

They probably serve the most variety of stuff but expect different beers from week to week.
