So I will be flying to Boston Wednesday evening (staying in Danvers) preparing for the biggest interview of my life on Thursday. But I thought, while I'm there, why not try and pick up some good beverages. I'm literally only going to be there with about four hours of free time Wednesday evening. I'll have a rental car but I'd like a little direction to where I might be able to pick up some good beer fairly fast. I'd really like to pick up some Heady and Lawson beers in particular but open to others. Thanks BA's
Hate to break it to you, but you wont find any HT or Lawson's anywhere in Boston (unless you organize a trade with someone). There is a bar in the Worcester area that gets Hill Farmstead distro, but that's just on tap and you'd spend half the time driving. I would highly recommend you give Trillium a call and see what they will have available, generally they're open like 4-7pm during the week I think. They are killing it with hoppy, New England style IPA/IIPAs as well as everything else they make. They're just north of the financial district, about a 10 minute walk or so if you're on Summer St. What area's your interview in? I would also recommend Tree House - they make a lot of stellar IPAs - but they're a ways south of Boston (hour deige or so depending on traffic) and may be a tougher haul; I would still give them a call anyway though. Cambridge Brewing Co is another you could seek out in Cambridge, great beer and pretty local if youve got a car. Jack's Abby is another one but again, if you want to get it from the brewery its a little bit of a hike. JA has good distro in the area though so you may find more of their stuff on store shelves. If you don't mind the idea of a drive to Worcester though, definitely look Jack's Abby up, as well as Wormtown (Be Hoppy IPA). If you exhaust all that and are looking for a store, I would recommend you look up the nearest Craft Beer Cellar and check it out. Sunset Grill in Allston has several hundred beers available on draft and bottle, as does Mead Hall in the Kendall Square area. Hopefully you have some luck, enjoy Boston and good luck on your interview!
I was going to add something based on my visit to Boston last year, but it looks like lambpasty covered it all, perfectly. Good luck on the interview.
If you have only 4 hours, you'll never make it to and from Tree House. I would suggest Trillium, and nearly is Mystic and Night Shift, both doing some very interesting things. One of the newest breweries is nearby Danvers, Lord Hobo. Otherwise, I am sure there are some good bottle shops (packers, in local parlance) in or near Danvers to pick up other stuff.
Ah! How did I forget Night Shift. Definitely worth a stop depending in your time, they make some stellar beers.
If you are in Boston with a car and a few hours to kill, Trillium is where you are going. Take a look through the monthly Trillium thread, this month's has great info on parking in the area, which can be a little frustrating for those new to town. No need to call them, just keep an eye on http://www.trilliumbrewing.com/wordpress_blog/beers/find-trillium-2/ to see what is available. Artaic should hopefully be available on Thursday. Just remember, if you are taking some home, they package in 25oz bottles rather than cans, which will add some heft to your suitcase. If you have some extra time, a good GPS and a little patience for ridiculous intersections, I would also recommend a stop at Night Shift. You can drink on premises at NS, unlike Trillium. Your best bet for a bottle shop accessible to Danvers is Redstone Liquors in Stoneham, they will have a good selection of anything that gets distribution to MA. For future reference, both Alchemist (http://alchemistbeer.com/buy/) and Lawsons (http://www.lawsonsfinest.com/find-our-beer/) make very clear where their beer can be found. But don't fret, Trillium IPAs > or at least = Heady.
Alright thanks everyone for the reply. I'm interviewing with a medical device company called Abiomed. I figured it would be hard to pick up some HT and Lawson stuff but just thought since I was in the area it wouldn't hurt to check. But Ill definitely be checking out your recommendations for stuff that would be a little more accessible. Thanks All
Hey bud, I just want to be very clear on this ... it isn't that it is "hard" to pick up heady or sip of sunshine here in Boston, it is that they simply do not sell it in this state, whatsoever. Heady Topper is only distributed to stores and bars in the northern half of Vermont, and same for Lawson's, other than Sip, which you can find at times in Connecticut. Good luck on the interview, enjoy the Trillium, and when you get the job and move to New England you can go Heady hunting.
OP--Danvers in on Boston's North Shore...the prior responses are talking about beer options spread throughout the entire state. Since you say you have a small 4 hour window, you may make better use of your time hitting nearby spots on the North Shore. For bottle shops, Kappy's in Danvers has a very good selection of Mass. stuff. Bogies in Beverly, Quality Liquors in Salem, and Vinnin Liquors in Swampscott (great selection and best prices available) are also local and offer good selections. As previously mentioned, Redstone is excellent. For nearby watering holes, I recommend Naumkaeg Ordinary or Gulu Gulu Cafe...both in nearby Salem, or Barrell House in Beverly. That being said, Trillium is as good as anything brewed anywhere, and you can only get their stuff at the brewery in Boston. So, you could spend your allotted time driving into the city instead of hitting local bottle shops. Good luck with the interview and hinting beers!
You should schedule some other biotech interviews nearby. There are a ton of companies within a half mile of Lord Hobo in Cambridge, and it's a candidate's market right now.
Thanks everyone for the replies. Much Appreciated!!! So, with traffic at 5 o'clock in Boston being crazy, I didnt have as much time as I had originally expected. But I did have time to stop by Kappy's and pick up some great stuff I'm not able to get in the midwest. Thanks again. Oh yeah, the interview went really good and I'm hoping to here something back today (fingers crossed). If I get it I'll be back up for training for about 2 weeks and venture out for some new brews. Hope everyone had a great and safe Labor Day weekend.
