Ok. So this thread isn't so much praising the beer as the the tasting room. I'd never been before and my girlfriend decides to surprise me this morning and drive me down to San Diego. We pull up to lost Abbey at 11 and there's only a few people there. As we get im Tomme is just at the bar, having a beer, talking..no big deal lol. It's a nice room, lots of wood and a real good vibe. Picked up tasters of Mo Betta Bretta and Serpents Stout (which is amazing). We take the tour. Nice tour, tour guide is really friendly. The tour is about 30 minutes and was enjoyable even though my glass was empty.
After the tour we get back to the beer: had witches wit, Saison blanc, and a devotion.

We then decide to buy some glassware and close out our tab. When we get the check and pay.
The odd thing is the receipt doesnt have a tip line....tips are cash only :slight_frown:.
So I decide To buy a shirt and ask them to add more money to the charge because we didn't have cash and felt bad.
Well they cant do it. The really cool part: one of the staff members overheard our conversation that we were here for my birthday. They tell me the shirt is free and not to worry. Awesome!
I will be back (with cash haha).

I thought that was really freaking amazing. Another example of how nice People in the beer industry are, the ones at Lost Abbey in particular.

    Sorry for rambling

    Cheers, and thank you

After the cool video of Tommy and Co. showing up at a fans tasting, to great stories like this, I'm starting to feel bad that I believed what some people said about Tommy/Lost Abbey being jerks and not caring about customers.

Yeah, LA gets a lot of bad press but my experience with them was awesome.

Stopped in while they were closed, drank beer for free for 3 hours, guy gave me an angel share GC and a red Poppy for no charge, a vial of lacto slurry and a few 50 lb bags of grain because I homebrew.

Can only speak for myself, but not complaints here :grinning:

Want to edit this in, but I didn't say it in OP but I also like their beers too haha

    Happy birthday!

Glad you enjoyed LA, they were probably the best brewery experience I've ever had, good people and good beer.

I agree about not believing the bad press and FWIW, I believe all their past issues have been resolved.

What kind of negative press were they getting in the past? Just curious.

I like most beers I tried from LA. I just wish they were cheaper.

a guy I know was doing a western US beer road trip and wanted to hit up Lost Abbey when he was in SD. They were closed that day but after he told them how far he had come they let him in and showed him the place along with sampling some beers. He also got to share a bottle of Duck Duck with Tomme. Lost Abbey cares about their customers and fans for sure.

Is there a reason why some breweries can't be reviewed? Or am I missing something?

If it's purely a production brewery, it can't be reviewed.

Thanks, would a tasting room qualify a brewery for a review? Captain Lawrence, for example, has a tasting room, outdoor patio w/ bocce ball court, and even serve some snacks now but can't be reviewed.

OP - sorry for the jack, but this was a good time to get some answers :grinning:

They earned a lot of their ill will, it's not like people woke up one day and collectively decided to shit on Lost Abbey for fun. They released a lot of very expensive, faulty beer and showed NO repent for it, even going so far as to say that some drinkers just didn't appreciate the lack of carbonation in Angels Share (or whatever beer didn't carbonate properly that month).

I'm not looking to rehash arguments that are 3+ years old at this point, but they went through some periods where their customer service could've made up for some of their quality control failures, and it didn't even come close to doing so. I've never had any personal issues with Tomme or anyone working there - the staff have always been nice to me personally, and I wish them no ill will. It's up to you to judge for yourself, but as someone who purchased plenty of flat AS, infected ASGC, various flat IPAs, etc, and couldn't even get them to admit there was a problem, let alone get some sort of compensation, I'm in no rush to praise the brewery as a whole.

Loved this place when I did a beer run down there... there were several candidates I would have loved to have in my kegerator but they weren't too keen on selling them.

Report an update to the establishment. I have done this and it gets changed here so you can review the place.

How many flat beers have you bought from them over the past 5 YEARS... Or DIPA;s (Anniversaries and Hop 15 that tasted like soap) and you feel bad from one random act of coolness???

It's their own fault they don't add a line for tips...quite moronic actually for every reason you just typed...

Call me a dick if you like...these are just the facts, not to mention I remember them entering Hop 15 into the Bistro SINGLE IPA festival Hop 15; about 6-7 years ago, and the rep admitting to me it's a 10% DIPA amoung 6-7% IPAs BEING JUDGED doesn't help.

Judging by your photo, you are a FW fan. I am a huge fan of FW as well. But I've heard of them throwing a "different version" of Pale 31 into almost all of the beer competitions they take part in (they have a TON of awards). Perhaps it's just a rumor, but it doesn't make me dislike FW.
