As I was reading through the "Funniest thing your non craft drinking friends have said about your beer choice", I couldn't help but think about the often said to me "oh yeah, I forgot you're a beer snob". My response is always to correct the terminology. My reply is I am a beer geek. I don't put down others choice of a BMC, but happy to spout on about craft beer.

That go me to thinking about the difference between a geek and nerd. Found this http://www.sparknotes.com/mindhut/2012/12/18/the-4-main-differences-between-geeks-and-nerds
in my "research" and validated my proper classification as a beer geek.

I skew towards snob in most things in life. Beer is no different. Readily admitting it makes it less bad, though, right...?

That being said, I can still throw down some PBR with the best of them. I went to a state school, after all.

I don't know the chemical makeup of a Sahti and I'll drink a lager... so I went with Geek.

I am a person who likes to drink and review beer, that's about the extent of it... no other labels are really needed.

I think the descriptions would describe my music interests as "geek" level. If "Name That Tune" were still a game I'd slay that bastard. As for beer? Nah, I'm going to have to co-opt the definition that @lambpasty points out - drinker.

Just a guy who is passionate about good beer, the community it creates and the people I get to meet because of beer. No labels needed.

I'm not sure geek, nerd, or snob really encapsulates my relationship with beer. I have some beer knowledge but I don't feel it's geek level (and thus certainly not nerd level), and I don't look down on others because of their beer choice even if there are styles and/or brews I don't like and thus don't drink.

Umm i had to go with None of the Above. More of a combination of the 3.
I can Nerd out about decoction mash and fermentation temperature.
I can Geek out about a Sour or a juicy DIPA.
I can turn my nose up with the rest of them at some(not all) mediocre beer.

    Prefer 'Enthusiast'.

The softer interpretations of 'snob' don't bother me either.

Geek & Nerd do have condescending connotations in my experience. I've always been a bit puzzled by the amount of willing acceptance of the label. Also I think those are often misapplied because real geeks actually have very deep knowledge of the subject, including the homebrewing & related chemistry. Many self-styled geeks are just hobbyists, imo.
