Exact same thing happened to me with an Almanac bottle a few years ago in my cupboard. Came home from work to find it had exploded on it's own. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you on how that happened.

its not always beer related, and usually isnt. glass travels VERY regularly at extreme temperatures (trucks that aren't refrigerated get up to 180F) and those bottles arent exploding everywhere. its usually a defect from the glass manufacturer of some type

also, ive seen this happen with brand new growlers as well. they weren't mishandled or set down hard, the bottom just comes right off, or even stranger, a random piece pops out of the side.

Growler killed itself since it was filled with three weavers.

I think Three Weavers makes some good beers, I like their ESB. But there growler fill prices are really high, $44 for a 2L fill of DIPA. I'd be pissed if my growler broke from them

I'll second this. Way back in the day I had a gig where we would clean and fill growlers, probably 200/day. Every so often we'd get a random chuck falling out or the bottom fell out. Seemed like it was just a weird glass issue.

If it hasn't been pasteurized the beer could continue to ferment. A wild yeast or bacteria infection might also do the same. Pedio and lacto eat anything and if they get into the beer they can cause explosions. Bad cleaning of the growler could encourage infection.

if your growler was in your car for like 6 months maybe but he was just taking it home from the brewery!

    How much?! :grimacing:

That works out as almost $8 for a 12 ounce pour?!?! For serious?

Edit - and to the OP - seems like a flaw in the glass for sure - even under pressure from additional fermentation it wouldn't fracture like that

I agree, especially at a brewery, that $44 for a 2L growler fill is outrageous. Especially for a style that hasn't been barrel aged/didn't take up more overhead for longer than a normal brewing cycle.

To OP, I'd recommend brew tek stainless steel growlers. I got one from Boxing Cat Brewery in Shanghai, China, and it has been my go-to over glass growlers ever since. Not only does it have a koozie to keep my beer cold, but also, should I need it, the top half of the top comes off and from there you can re-carb your beer. Really handy, never had a problem with it.

    EDIT: Link: http://www.brew-tek.com/products/drinkfresh-growlers/

I promise I don't work for Brew Tek, just been completely satisfied with my use of their product.
