Has anybody had any gout (symptoms), supposedly associated with their beer hobby?

Never, fortunately. Although I did have symptoms of celiac but, thankfully, that wasn't the problem, nor was it anything worse.

Beware, According to my doctor, I had a gout episode this last Sunday, and it was very painful. I had an x-ray and blood drawn. I'm still suffering a little, but I have missed several days of work. They say alcohol, especially beer, can bring on gout. I'm only 43 :slight_frown:, in very good physical condition, exercise weekly, and have a good diet. Prior to this episode, I did eat a bunch of chicken adobo with chicken liver. Organ meat, beer, certain vegetables, and beer, supposedly can bring it on. I'll give up meat, just let me be able to continue to enjoy beer...Just an fyi.

Only once in 2007, after a 10 day beer binge/beach trip/UGA football trip. Had on bottom of foot, very painful to walk. Tons of water and cherry juice for a few days cleared it up. Haven't had episode since then.

I'm 37, and I'm pretty sure I get gout episodes, especially in my right big toe (but I also have some other joint pains). It took me about a year to figure out why I had a sore toe. I've been trying to manage it with a high intake of water (at least 60oz a day) with cherry concentrate mixed in when I get a bad episode. I will probably be going for a uric acid lab test to confirm my assumptions in the near future. :slight_frown:

Get the test buddy. This is the first time I had an excruciating joint problem, and I am very physical. The test revealed I had high uric acid in my blood. Was it the beer or meat. Who knows, but I will give up meat to be able to keep drinking beer

Hopefully you never encounter the beer and gout problem.

I would recommend it. The breakdown of purines (the main culprit here) leads to a build-up of uric acid, which at high enough concentrations can crystallize and cause gouty arthritis. This or your kidneys are filtering out the uric acid even at normal levels. If this is your diagnosis, you will be recommended to eat a low purine diet... this usually includes beer (high in purines).

Red meat (especially liver) is your main cause.
You gotta be drinking a lot of beer otherwise.

I just had a Duvel and Dark Apparition. I'm trying to prove them wrong. Plus I popped some Prednisone they prescribed to me for the gout

I'm also very active - run ~3 times a week & play hockey once a week. Usually 1-2 beers a day though...sometimes more if I have the time...aka the weekend. Were you medicated for your gout episode? I'm not keen on the idea of being medicated in order to continue my beer hobby/habit. If my uric acid is high, I will probably have to try to cut back on beer consumption. :slight_frown:

2 big things you left out are genetics and shellfish consumption.

I've had two big gout occurrences since I turned 30 (my only 2) and they suck. I'm also in above average shape for a guy who's almost 40. It don't matter. There's really no way to stop them, you can only try to control the amount of occurrences you'll have and how painful they'll feel.

They gave me Prednisone for this episode, because I said I needed to get back to work, being the President and all. I have already missed two days of work. My dad has also had a bout or two or gout in his big toe. So it runs in the family. You treat each episode, and practice prevention habits through diet and lifestyle...

I've got a cousin around my age with the gout diagnosis and medication. And he's not even a big beer drinker. He keeps telling me to switch to whiskey. lol

Unfortunately, alcohol ingestion increases the production and decreases the excretion of uric acid (uric acid is causative of gout). In an acute gouty attack, uric acid levels are usually elevated but can be normal. Best thing for an acute gout flare is probably to reduce consumption of alcohol...if this is more likely than not the trigger. NSAID's, like indomethacin, are best during an acute attack. I'm no doctor, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night

Been suffering from gout for about 10 years now. My Dr says beer is a major cause of my pain. I take medicine, drink lots of water, and monitor my beer consumption. I usually get about two severe flare ups a year. But its not deterred me from not drinking. I just do so in a more moderate method.
