Interesting how you and I can be on somewhat (towards complete) opposite ends of the spectrum on this one. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Gonna fire this link out as a new beer I just reviewed, one that got me thinking about how I rate things (yet again for the nth time), a new Ocelot IPA:

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @utopiajane for starting us off today,

54 degrees, cloudy and wet. Definitely a colder than average Sunday in the city where Mark Rypien played in high school and still calls home, and while not raining the last few hours, it was clearly doing so in the morning. While I wouldn’t mind it being warmer outside, the last week or so’s weather has kept the smoke from the wildfires down to acceptable levels.

This last week has been spent earnestly contemplating and then watching football. On Thursday, during the near-meaningless last Seahawk preseason game (Cowboys fans: Christine Michael is now your problem – enjoy the mental miscues), about a dozen of us met up at the Swamp Tavern to draft players for fantasy football. Then, on Friday and yesterday I gave myself over to college football. Both my teams went down to defeat, but not too terribly. UW overcame a seriously lousy beginning to lose by three in the hostile stadium of a better team, and EWU lost with dignity to Oregon and their own former all-world QB, Vernon Adams, in a game that could be likened to a puppy trying to take on an 18-wheeler. Jordan West wasn’t bad as Adams’ successor, and might actually be a better pure passer. It must be said, Adams was pretty amazing for a guy who’d been with Oregon for about 2 weeks.

In new beer news, I had myself a Farmlandia at Browne’s Tavern in the Browne’s Addition neighborhood on Tuesday. When I asked the mustachioed waiter what kind of beer it was, he replied (in almost ridiculously over-the-top femme style), “It’s an EFFERVESCENT!” Never heard of that style, I must say… Interesting take on the saison, but not enough so to displace Selkirk Abbey's beers in my heart.

Today’s new beer is a wild ale brewed in the wilds of eastern Pennsylvania, courtesy of @LehighAce06.

I was worried it had been sitting too long, but when compared with other reviews, I don't think my experience was much different. Not a huge, fearsomely funky flavor bomb, but if it were brewed locally, I’d have no problem drinking it regularly. In fact, I think I’d quite like it on a warm day. The only criticism I have is that the carbonation could have been a little higher, and the mouthfeel was a little cottonmouthy. It's like a heavier version of a dry rosé I'm quite fond of from the area in eastern Washington where I grew up, actually.

Pretty sure I'll be back with something else today. Until then, cheers!

Pretty sure if he turned water into beer it would taste pretty close to this.

Back at it with a tasty new beer from Founders!
ReDANKulous Imperial Red India Pale Ale
    [IMG]
Been looking forward to this since I heard about it; I'm just a sucker for hoppy red/amber ales!

This one pours that lovely dark rusty brown to red color with a khaki-tan head; tons of tiny seafoam like bubbles, which stick around quite persistently. Quite a bit of thin lacing left behind in the glass, from top to bottom.

That great burnt cedar (that's what it reminds me of) aroma with bright citrus (grapefruit) hoppiness at the end.
Tastes delicious that malty-cedar like quality comes through right up front, then pow! That hoppy bitterness comes through to round it out.
Feel is full of lingering bitterness and that smoky malt lingers for a while. Alcohol is hidden very well and does show up until it gets really warm.
Overall, another winner from Founders. I usually pass on there Backstage Series beers as they are either not in my wheelhouse or they are to expensive. This was $11.99 for the bomber which is something I can live with price-wise. While I am not a big fan of the name I am a huge fan of the taste! It reminds me of their Red's Rye PA, but kicked up quite a bit.

    Cheers!

Well folks I had to do it! I made a trip to my closest store just to be able to participate in NBS.And Judging by what I've seen so far it's going to be hard to keep up. I'm Ill prepared but I'm diving in any way. Thank you Maria for the wake up call' wonderful.... And not to bring anyone down but today is the one year anniversary of the night I got the dreaded phone call no one wants to get - but so many do. I was notified at 2 am that my youngest brother , Roger, had been in a terrible accident and was in critical condition in the hospital in Wilmington NC. So on a plane I went. And that started a week of sheer sadness and pain. And in the end my fine brother had to succumb to a severe head injury and hematoma. They'll be stories this week. It helps to talk about it and remember the good times. But one thing I've learned is that their are many people with equally and more significant tragedies. Live your life to the fullest. I try but, sometimes forget. It's hard to remember with all the stresses that surround us. Please in honor of all that have passed unexpectedly ( of course including those that have fought for our freedom) try your best to do this.
AND the BEER that I purchased a single of - and had to dig to get......
    Long Trail Farmhouse American IPA.

The beer pours a hazy orange -gold with a billowy head leaving rings of lacing on the glass.

Aroma is of tropical fruits - pineapple, mango and citrus- grapefruit . There is a sweet bready malt aroma tucked in there also.

Taste follows with a tropical fruit presence, grapefruit and resinous pine. The malt is present but not so much so. The taste is well balanced. There is a nice blend of hop favors and, well it tastes like exactly how its described on the label. Like and American IPA. It quite nice actually.

Feel is crisp, clean and dry. With a medium to high carbonation. Nice Bitter fading finish.

Well I rolled the dice not expecting much and honestly got more than I bargained for. I paid 2 bucks for the single and would have no problem shelling out 6 for a sixer. Was a Long Trail drinker in my younger craft days but for some reason haven't traveled that path lately. This was a pretty decent IPA from them I would buy again over some other high volume breweries. Good for sure.

And for New Old Vinyl Sunday this week I'm choosing a track from a fantastic Beatles album- Rubber Soul.
Great Lennon tune: In My Life.....
Live it and peace my friends. And as always thanks for listening![IMG] [IMG]

Happy New American Double IPA Sunday!

Pretty nice day here in the Western Slopes of CO. Low 80s, cloudy/sunny. Did a nice hike in a new area. Quite different than Utah. This is a very nice brewery, lot's of excellent brews from them, always have liked their offerings. This one has got to be the best that I've liked from them, easily.

    Happy NBS!

I'm back in my home state this week for work and am enjoying seeing family. For this round I present Ozark Brewing Co.'s American Pale Ale.

Pours a nice golden color. Slight off white chalk head.

Smell has a nice grassy hop, supported by a great crackery malt backbone. Simple but effective. Reminds me of Daisy cutter with less hop and more malt. But that just maybe the grassy overtones.

Taste is just that. A nice slightly earthy bitterness supported by a crackery malt. Again, nothing super fancy but beautiful in its simple design and function.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side and crisp.

Overall a great example of the style and proof that doing the basics right makes a damn fine beer.

Well, at least our friend didn't sketch this one. Squirrels are embarrassed when they see it in the woods. Or as Seinfeld might say, "you want phallic, I got phallic for you".

I am not usually a NBS poster because well I usually work on Sundays but no work today or tomorrow so having this which I thought was a beer recommended by. @Shroud0fdoom but because I am a dumbass he said Secret Sauce so I give you Lord Hobo's Boom Sauce
    [IMG]
16 oz can poured into shaker pint canned date of 8/31

A: big creamy and soapy looking white head burnt orange in color with a mild haziness that could be due to it being cold

S: peppery, earthy spices, crackery malts, a little bit of pine but a lot of pepper and some rust like metallic

T: lots of peppery spiciness to the hops with that big earthiness marigold in nature almost like an underlying peppermint taste then a light sweetness and a crackery maybe even bordering on bready finish.

M: medium feel the hops they are using give it a tangy tingly feel on the tongue makes it feel a bit more carbonated than it is.

O: Its not a bad beer at all. I wasn't expecting that tangy earthy spicy hop characteristics but it is fairly smooth beer and I could see it being pretty easy to drink alcohol is hidden quite nicely. Although I wouldn't buy it again I'm not overly dissappointed I have 3 others to drink although I am still blaming @Shroud0fdoom for letting me buy the wrong beer :stuck_out_tongue:

Happy Sunday! Hope everyone is having a glorious extended weekend. Our house is somewhat quiet, but I checked in with both collegiate offspring and everything seems copacetic. Thus, time for a beer!
I'm hopping on the Oktoberfest bandwagon with Ayinger's offering:

A beautiful amber/copper clear color with an inviting and pillowy ivory white head. The foam reluctantly receded, leaving behind welcoming tracks. On the first sniff, I noticed some spice from the noble hops followed by sweet malt, bread and caramel. The taste brought the malt, backed up with a gentle bitterness and spiciness. Compared to my current benchmark - the 2015 SN - this is more subtle and complex. Medium-bodied with a clean and slightly tangy finish. This edges out my current Marzens as my favorite of the year, but there are many more waiting their turn in the fridge!
    Cheers!
